I understand GAP is a respected builder; however I also understand they are at times very backlogged. Are there any other recommended M40A3/A5 builders? Looking to have a M40A5 type rifle made closer to an actual "spec" rifle.

Most all competent builders out there are going to have a similar or longer wait for a build. If you source your own components you can shorten your wait time significantly as most assembly projects are fairly quick from the shops, including GAP. You probably won't find a better example of "spec" than GA Precision though, unless you have a line on an active duty 2112 doing builds on the side.
If you're really impatient, watch the FS forum. I see a GAP 'A5 in there about twice a month. That's how I got my GAP M40A1 and couldn't be happier.

Mike Lau makes a fine M40 also. However, if you're low in the patience department, you might want to look elsewhere.
Connor McLeod with Celtic Rifles did a great job on a spec M40A5 for me. He stayed in touch and sent photos as the rifle was built. Stand up guy who builds an accurate rifle.

You've been given sound advice above. Pick one, do the time (try to be patient and wait), and you will be beyond pleased when you take possession of your rifle.
A big +1 for Connor. I have a few rifles he built me and they shoot the lights out! He's not a former 2112, but has been there and seen stuff first hand. A replica from him will be as close as you will get without signing up!
