I still can't grasp the 1 1/2" vs 1 1/4" swivel on the original
M40.

Wichata swears that their swivel is original. Measured inside the loop it is 1 1/2".

Is there a different swivel, earlier one that was 1 1/4" inside the loop?

Looking at the earliest M40 pictures, looks like the loop just fits the sling. The Wichata has additional room, about 1/4".

Comments please....

Re: M40 swivel

Again, a bit of a terminology problem. The original M40 was basically a standard wood stocked Remington Varmint Special without checkering and with, I believe, standard sling studs on it. I am open to correction here as I havn't ever handled one of these.
The M40A1 was the first USMC built sniper rifle and had the McMillan glass stock and Wichita sling loops. The Wichita loops require a steel insert in both the forearm and buttstock for the machine screw thread on their stem.
The Wichita loops are 1 1/2" wide and made so that they will take a 1 1/4" sling to lay flat on the bottom of the loops.
1 1/4" slings take 1 1/2" loops to lay flat. In 1 1/4" loops the edges of the sling get curled up on the sides when ever any pressure is put on them and they don't adjust easily.

So, the M40 had a 1 " sling?

How was that sling marked?

Re: M40 swivel

Mine will hold 1 1/4 " sling . Walnut stock with metal butt plate . MRT 1 1/4" sling. Removeable swivels. Don't know if it is correct but I think so.
