Hey Guys,

I recently started to get into the world of .22's over from AR's and I am looking to build up a match grade rifle for doing some plinking.

I would like to know if anyone has come across some sort of kit for a .22 M40A3 rifle. I'm thinking that if one does actually exist that it's just going to be the stock for you to drop in your own internals. I am basically looking for anything at this point.

If I can't go for that, I am open and looking for some help on what you guys would suggest for building a reliable, accurate rifle. (Like I said, I don't really know much about .22's)

Re: M40A3 Conversion

You're looking for a Remington 40x in .22. They have the standard Remington profile and will fit into the McMillan A series stocks. Unless you get lucky, you'll be limited to single shot. Of course, if you look through this forum, you will see that there are a couple smiths coming out with their own .22 actions that might just fit what you are looking for.

Re: M40A3 Conversion

I would find one of those CMP Remington 40x rifles with heavy barrel and simply pick up a McMillian A4 stock and bed it. When you order the A4 from McMillan have it inletted for DD Ross or the Badger Ordnance bottom metal as this is what the M40A3 has the current being the Badger Ordnance metal. It will be a single shot and the bottom metal will be mostly for show but it will look correct. The 40x rifles are getting scarce again so don't wait too long or you will be paying way too much for it. A good source would be here on the hide or even Gunbroker. Also, when you are finished be sure to post a picture here on the hide.

Re: M40A3 Conversion

Keep in mind that building a .22LR M40A3/A5 trainer is not going to be any cheaper than building the fullbore rifle.

If you can get a 40X, then do so. They are excellent rifles. However you don't need to set it up exactly like the M40A3 to reap the benefits. The core goal of a .22 trainer is to hone the fundamentals. You can do that with a 40X or a Savage MkII.

Having said that, I still absolutely love shooting my 40XB. I just have to make sure I run some rapid bolt drills on the duty gun to override the single shot limitations of the 40x.
