Tried using the search feature and I'm more than positive this was covered but if I were to build a replica of an M40a5, would I be able to get the same action that the Marine Corps uses?

I got the parts list from a buddy that works Navy Acquisition and know one of the smiths from the Marine Corps Rifle Team. Just wondering about the action. So what is a modified Remington 700 short action? Is there a specific action that coincides with the part number listed?

There is no "special" action from remington for the M40's, it's just a regular short action that has been trued and machined to accept the DD Ross rail. The only thing special about the USMC actions is they fall within specific serial number and series ranges. All current M40's are built on E and early G prefix receivers so if you wanted an "accurate" clone that's all you have to match is the prefix. Here is mine :).

Thank you Scat, what I needed to know. Any one closer to a clone than the other? As in, the majority of a5s are XX prefix receivers?

Generally speaking, converted A3's will have an E prefix and newly made A5's will have a G prefix. A majority of A5's are converted A3's.

On a different note, did the option for optics change? Looks like Premier 3x15x50 and Schmiddy's are interchangeable now.

With USMC issued M40A5 stocks showing up in pictures on the internet this thread my be resurrected. In my opinion the rarest of the stocks will be the ones that still have all their original Accessories and the stocks without the bolt relief cut into them. The stocks without the relief cut are likely original M40A3 stocks that were upgraded to A5 stocks. Keep an eye out for those stocks they will demand a premiuM. A few A5 stocks are available now with more coming to market in the future.
