Hello,

Ive been building an M40A5 over the last year or so, acquiring most components save for the barrel, comp, and gunsmithing work required to the receiver to make it clone correct.

Speaking with the reps over at Schneider, the barrel i would receive would be in a raw form.

Whats the clone correct coating?

If i spray paint, what kind of durability should i expect? Is it "good nuff' "

Just for shits and giggles i sprayed a test spot on a 6.5CM barrel that is polished and didnt bother degreasing or any prep with Krylon O.D. camo paint.
That was about three years ago, i let it cure for a reasonable amount of time and have occasionally tried scratching it off with my thumb nail with little effect as well as handling and being transported in a drag bag very little wear.
With proper prep and a matte clear coat to seal i feel confident in doing the whole rifle with Krylon once i finsh installing the KMW Loggerhead hardware.
If it gets fucked i can strip and spray again.
Is it as good as cerakote, hell no but its good enough for me.

Spray paint durability is the worst. Zero chemical resistance too. I just spray painted a satin stainless barrel flat black with matte clear. The barrel vise totally fucked it up! 🤣
(Rustoleum and Krylon with primers)

Even just wiping the barrel with alcohol and paper towel made the paint transfer. I did 3-4 attempts and finally decided $100 Cerakote is worth it. If it weren’t for the fact I paint my plates, I would be out $60 in paint. Shit is $10 a can now.

Did you bother to seal it with a matte clear coat ?
I would think a barrel vice could damage even cerakote if not very carefull.
I have some 91% isopropyl alcohol i am goig to see if it wipes off since you have me curious now.

I did state that I used matte clear. Yeah, I bothered with a lot of shit that week to make it work too. I wrap the barrels with suede leather before putting into a vise. The compression is what screwed it.

Black Oxide…I believe TBA, LRI and RW Snyder build A5 clones and can apply the black oxide.

@LongRifles Inc. and/or @RWSGunsmithing can confirm/deny.

In full disclosure i did take the 91% isopropyl alcohol and a paper towel to the test spot that has been on there for about three years.
I had to scrub it but it did completly remove it.
Maybe i need to try Allumahyde next and figure out what to do with the 5 or 6 cans of Krylon camo.🤔
Or just take the damn thing to Viking a local shop that believe XLR Industries recommended to me one the times i was there.
