I have a 700 long action that is really smooth until I pull the trigger and then it's super tough to open. If I open it and close it, it's fine. I can open it without any problems. Still smooth. Open close open close everything is fine but as soon as a close the bolt and then pull the trigger it is very hard to open. Any ideas on how I can fix this??? I am doing all these tests with nothing in the chamber. Just dry running the action. Thanks guys

Re: M700 bolt opening problems.........

When you pull the trigger, you are releasing the firing pin forward. When you lift the bolt, it pulls the firing pin back re-cocking it and causing resistance via the firing pin spring. Once it is cocked you can close it and open as much as you want without this resistance until you pull the trigger. I'm not sure what the confusion is. Maybe taking it apart (the bolt) and giving it a good cleaning will make it sightly less "stiff".

Also having the bolt timed may help.

Re: M700 bolt opening problems.........

Sounds like you need to grease/lube the part of the bolt where the cocking piece rides in the bolt body. It's on the bottom side of the bolt and is a ramped surface.

What you are doing is releasing the firing pin. To cock the firing pin back you have to open the bolt to re cam the firing pin. Take your bolt out and look at it. You will see that firing pin is notched on top of the tapered slot. To de-cock the firing pin give it a twist. You can polish this area to make it smoother.

+1 he nailed it

Re: M700 bolt opening problems.........

Remove the firing pin assembly from the bolt. Take out your trusty Dremel tool and put in a Cratex wheel and polish the hell out of the camming surface on the bolt. That will help a lot. After that you need someone who knows what their doing.

Re: M700 bolt opening problems.........

OK so my hard bolt lift was solved by a careful cleaning and re-lube. Before it was so hard to lift the bolt I felt like I was going to break the handle. Much better now. I took the firing assembly out and cleaned the thread and then put just a touch of grease on them. I clean the lugs and put just a touch of grease on them as well. That sloved it. Its much smotter now. Something must have been dirty and the thread were getting jammed. Thanks guys.
