I'm just curious to see how many people are using which, and how many have switched from one to the other.

I switched from PC to MAC and man I wish I had done it sooner. My wife is a computer programer and it took her about an hour of playing around on my MacBook Pro to want a Mac for her next computer. I just hope that they add Blue Ray as an option soon.

My wife does photography and she isnt the most computer literate person so I figured she would hate going from a PC to a MAC... boy was I wrong! I can't even get on the thing! She loves it..

I got a mac in college when my HP ate shit after TWO YEARS of normal use. (conveniently out of extended warranty)

That was 6 years ago, macbook running strong ever since.

Buy once cry once, they are superior products in both design and quality. Any argument is void.

Started with an Exidy Sorcerer(before DOS), IBM XT,IBM AT, my last PC was a TigerMP loaded to the hilt. Got a used mac laptop(Tibook 667) on a whim and haven't looked back.

For those of you on the fence, check out an app called Crossover. It's an implementation of WINE that allows Windows apps to run in Mac OS. No need to dual boot to run your favorite windows apps/games. So no need to purchase windows.

You can dual boot (Bootcamp) or run VMWare (windows runs on a shim) and run Windows OS on your Mac if you need to these days.

As the family tech support weenie for 3 (with a background in programming and working in medium tech for 24 years), I have not looked at purchasing a new windows machine in 10 years. 3 Macs in the stable though.

MAC's have security holes too. It's not publicized because Apple is not seen as the "Bad guy" like Bill Gates was.

Iphones, I-pads, and MAC's have been and will continue to be hacked into.

Yes they are easier to use, you can get STAR office free, and they are a decent platform.

Cost a bit more, and todays Windows machines can do anything a MAC can do, including graphics and audio....

My HP shit the bed right after the 2 year mark. One of the soldering's that control power to the HD is apparently heat sensitive and prone to cracking. I'd thought about getting it fixed but I was getting so frustrated with Vista. It seemed like every week there was a dozen or more updates for that POS.

As for these guys My MacBook Pro cost just a little more than my HP. Also the next time you set up your new Windows PC let us know how many hours it takes ok. It took less than 15 min to set my Mac up and be surfing the web. Hell it took my HP 5 min or more just to start up, and shut down everyday. Guess how long that takes on the Mac? 45seconds to a min for startup and 6-10 seconds to shut down. Oh and everything that I have on here has been easier and worked faster than on my PC. As for the Games and stuff that uses Windows a Mac can run windows quite a few ways so it can use all that stuff.

As for viruses, malware, and spyware it is a bit harder to produce those things for Mac because of the Unix foundation. Just like Linux. It will happen more and more as more of the people that devote their time to that stuff see the potential of hacking into them. Windows has been popular for longer, but I'm thinking that might be changing. The one reason that I agree with and I've heard that most people like Macs is "Everything just works". So joke all you want, but the jokes on you.

Bad guys always attack the successful business, that's why windows got attacked for so many years.

Windows 7 is pretty damn tight, I love it..

SO bad guys are turning resources to MAC and Linux.


FYI MAC is NOT built on Unix, it's built on LINUX - which is open source.

I think they used BSD linux tho, that's good stuff there - NASA uses that for the rovers on Mars, and most satellites.


Won't argue MAC is the way to go but you have a bit of a learning curve with the backwards mouse, they cost more, and software for them costs more.

I <span style="text-decoration: underline">wish</span> it'd be build on Linux.
OSX is a "glueage" of *BSD kernels, laying over a Mach microkernel.

I use them all.
Linux is my main system, though I love Apple HW. So I have Apple HW running Linux, and I use KVM to run Win7 for applications which are MIA on Linux.

I run the helpdesk for a medium sized engineering consulting firm, and we have basically all levels of computer user(from ultra tech savvy engineers just coming out of college, to grandpa energy that used a typewriter on his master thesis and never bothered learning what these crazy computers kids these days were using were for).

Basically I am a fan of mac laptops. They're very convenient to use. I've used one to pretty good extent.

However, don't believe for a minute that they're somehow more reliable, or they "just work".

It's a marketing slogan. I can't tell you how many technical roadbumps I've hit messing around with this thing.

My other main complaint about macs is that if something does go wrong fixing them is a huge pain in the ass. I can easily replace just about any part on a PC or laptop, and any non physical issue is very easy for me to resolve as well. If something goes wrong with the mac you have to deal with "geniuses" which is another marketing slogan these assholes are generally retarded neck-beards.

For a desktop I personally can't fathom why you'd ever want to purchase a mac unless you can't be bothered to build a computer.

PC's do just about anything I can think of better, and for less money in a workstation. Of course you're free to run whatever OS you please on either, including the macs with bootcamp.

So really at that point you're just buying the pretty hardware, which although it has improved recently is still a ripoff in comparison to what you can put something together for.


Mac makes a nice usable push button system. Just don't buy the hype that everything is going to work like magic and you'll never have problems. You'll have all kinds of little quirky issues just like you will with a PC.

In my ideal world I'm using a Macbook pro for mobility, a droid phone, and a PC workstation running windows 7 X64.

My personal opinion.

I put I have both as I own a couple of Mac laptops and a new kick ass laptop. My first Mac went 7 years before there was even a slight glitch, new HD and it's working away.

The second Mac, Powerbook, is still rocking strong.

I've had numerous Windows platforms shit the bed on me. Will that keep me from using them? No, but given a choice I would prefer a Mac.

Now maybe Windows 7 will change my mind, who knows

Funny thing...I got the windows 7 beta tester and ran a dual boot on my MAC. The OS ran better on my MAC than it did on my buddy's PC. If you really want to mess with Windows 7 (It is the best operating system they have put out in recent memory) just dual boot your MAC...you will thank yourself.

Yeah my brother is running bootcamp with OSx and Win7.

OSx is great for the interfunctionality between other Apple devices it provides, while Win7 is just all around great for anything PC you may need.

I'd definitely love to grab another macbook and run this setup.

I had a Macbook Pro and I like graphic intense games. That being said the comp ran em great up until the graphics card fried. I figured no biggie, but it's tied into the logic board. Basically if this happens to you, you gotta fix ($900) or buy a new one. I will buy another MAC, its too damn good not to.

I always buy the second cheapest computer available during the Christmas buying peak.

After spending a lifetime in the I/T business, I have concluded that they all pretty much do the same thing. Extra bells and whistles are simply enticements to buy more than what's actually needed; the basic computing monolith.

90% of the computer's real utility is going to come from the subsequent applications we get that implement our specific interests. The last time I bought software it was for security and to back up my DVD's.

Mostly, the rest of the stuff I have is simply old apps reinstalled on the newer platform. They still work just peachy, and there's nothing that needs to be un/relearned. For example, the software I make and print my targets with is Visio version 2.0, copyrighted 1991, 1992.

New capabilities?

Sure, but only if the cost is justified. Usually it is, but only after the app becomes part of imbedded technology, and not the new cutting edge. Bugs are usually gone by then, too.

Rush? No rush. Reminds me of the old adage; "Avoid the June rush, flunk now...".

Apple? Not yet, and I've been in it since well before the 8086 was cutting edge. My boss brought in the first Mac. Cute, but it wasn't what ran the shop, and mostly, it still ain't.

I'm with Sandrat. I fell victim to sticker shock last year when I replaced my old laptop. My wife is a teacher and was issued a Mac for school and finds it easier to use then a PC. She is very technologically challenged.

I hate to say this because I usually flame the Linux pimps when they go hawking their OS and the OP had nothing to do with Linux.

However, I've run about every OS imaginable and a bunch most people never have heard of. IMHO, the buyer's remorse will set in soonest with a Windoze system. The Mac has a superior OS (it's UNIX-based) but the brand name mark-up is too steep. Linux is every bit the equal if OSX (all the *NIX OSes have become so similar, they now refer to them all as <span style="font-style: italic">UNIX</span>-like). And not only is the Linux OS free, the variety of Linux-compatible freeware is staggering.

Linux's achille's heel is that M$ pays 3rd party hardware manufacturers not to make Linux drivers for their products. However, there are more M$-haters dedicated to the cause of writing open source software for Linux (including drivers) than there are programmers at Redmond. It's generally only a problem if you want to run really obscure offbeat hardware.

I vote for buying a naked PC and installing Linux on it.

Here's a couple of zingers for you.
1. M$'s Redmond HQ runs more Linux servers than M$ servers.
2. The M$ icons on your desktop were created by an M$ graphic artist using a Macintosh.

fact is you can configure a PC for less. It will run well and do everything you need. But its also like buying an old american sports car. There are all sorts of quality control issues, it is going to require maintenance and realistically if your gonna run it hard everyday its going to breakdown.
Buying a Mac is an investment, fact is it will run longer. Last I read average PC life is 3 years to original owner where as a MAC is 5 years. Mine is on 7 years and running strong. MACs dont require constant reformatting, they dont have huge memory leaks. If you want a system that you can buy and forget about and know that it is going to run and run well for a long time get a MAC. If you want a system that you can tweak, worry about viruses (or run virus software that will deplete alot of your performance) perform regular maintance get a PC.
