Trying to understand something pretty basic. With bolt actions there are long and short actions, with AR platforms there is the AR-15 and AR-10 platform. Why is the AR-10 receiver needed for cartridges like the .308 and the 6.5 CM when they fit a short action?

Because AR’s are not based on the same length actions bolt rifles. The “large frame” is needed for your “short action” rounds like the 308 and 6.5 creedmoor. The OAL of the cartridge dictates the larger frame. If anything, a Large Frame AR platform would be the equivalent a short action bolt gun. There are companies who make a “long action” AR platform which will take your 300wm type calibers.
