Hi all, I've been mostly a reader, and this is my first real post!

I have a question about my new 10FP in .308. I got it at Cabelas with a Choate Tactical stock and a center feed detachable box mag from factory. The problem I have is that I couldn't find the right mags ANYWHERE. They don't carry any at Cabelas, and I tried buying the only savage mags there were at Midway, which didn't fit. Does anyone know who makes those mags and where I can get them?

I also can't seem to find this package (with Choate Tactical stock and detachable mag) from Savage's website... Do you guys know anything about that? Maybe it's a Cabela's dealer-only/exclusive model?

Thanks!

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

Thanks, guys!

I have seen many threads about Jeff at CDI's stuff... (and I'm a complete newb)

Can someone shed some light on why you guys like his conversions? What about his parts make them better than the average offering?

Thanks!

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

I have the same gun, and I believe it was a Cabelas only model. I haven't tried any other mags so far but I am looking for some extras also.

Considering doing a conversion as others have done as I can't get the SSS guys to answer my emails, so basically no mags are available. I want those SSS 9 rounders and would be happy to buy if I could!

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

i like jeffs cause its a clean, easy install and gets you what you want, a DBM with higher capacity. uses mags that are available with no waiting games.

Danska, give this a try. the next run of mags is in august. i am on the list for 3 of them. try sending an email that says i want one or two or however many mags you want, how do you want paid? and i bet you get a reply.

I have the CDI bottom metal on my 10FP and the thing that I like is the AI mags which are pretty much the standard that others are measured by and the lock up is very solid when I insert the mag.

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

I'm assuming the SSS mags are 3.00 OAL IIRC. This is one of the reasons I'm wanting to stick with these over AI mags, mainly for the length reason related to my hand loads (2.940 w/208 a-max).

I just want to be able to buy a couple now and a few more eventually, I'll try contacting them again.

Can you actually stuff a cartridge loaded to 2.94 OAL into an OEM Savage 24" .308 barrel???

I realize that the OEM mags will accept up to 3.0" but isn't the chamber very small on these 10 FCP's?

trying to learn here, bear with me if that's a newb question.

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

my lands start at 2.835" if it matters and when you say your assuming the SSS mags are 3.00" do you mean the acme system they started using recently or the 9 round mags they have been selling? the 9s are just factory with a box in place of the floorplate. the acme uses a mag i cant place. looks like an fal or enfield kinda

I'm sorry I meant my Factory Savage 4 rnd mag. But nonetheless, if your lands start at 2.835", which I believe my 10 FCP does as well...how do you get a cartridge seated to 2.94" ??? Is it jammed into the rifling 1/10 of an inch" ?

thanks

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

me, i dont. i seat at 2.82" but hey if you need new savage mags call savage directly 413-568-7001 and they have penty at a decent price too

danska runs them long. mayby his chamber of throat are done differently?

oh and to the OP, sss is best bang for the buck. $80 for a sss 9 round and no need to swap bottom metal out

That's what I was getting at, more or less. I have never reloaded. Can you jam a bullet .1" into the lands?

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

well im off the lands by 0.015" if ive done it correctly. i guess you could run it long and have no "jump" to the lands. it will have an effect, like greater pressures? not really sure, there are lotsa things that you can do to affect different things. seating depth, powder compression and seating in the lands all build pressure i think ive read. im just trying to deal with one variable at a time, lol

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

Thanks guys. I ended up having to suspend the purchase...

So please correct me if I'm wrong... the CDI conversion takes AI mags? I say in another thread that AI is going to release a stock for the Savage 10 series with the 4.40" hole spacing, is that true? If so, that may push me further towards CDI, since they'll use the same mags!

Re: Mag for Savage 10FP

Sorry I meant 2.84, I'll have to look @ my reloading book, which isn't here to see what my chamber dimensions are. I don't believe I'm touching the lands even in my case.
