When can you substitue magnum primers in your loads? I'm loading some .223 and can't find in my 5 reloading manuals any mention of magnum primers for the 77grain Sierra bullets I'm using. They mostly state to use Remington 7 1/2s. Is it acceptable to substitue magnums for the max loads listed?

It's best to reduce your powder charge a grain or two and work back up. It's not huge, but there will be an increase in muzzle velocity and pressure.

I use 24gr W748 with CCI 450 mag primers for reloading .223

What kind/weight bullets are you using for that load?

Everyone agrees to back down and work back up. But I have never seen a difference
in my loads. Still it isn't worth the risk.

The only logical reason I can think of using a Sm Mag primer in a 223 load is for the thicker cup thickness if you plan on trying to develop a load with higher pressures/vel such as NATO spec pressures. I did so a few years back when I devloped my own Mk 262 load but I used the old nickel plated Win sm rifle primers; I had a case of 5000. Down to about 3000 now.

I use CCI 450s or 41s on all my AR loads especially on the stout over max listed loads of VV540 pushing the molied 80 or 82 Bergers between 2840 and 2880 on my service rifles. I started using the 450s back in 95.
