Hey guys, I set out last night to fit the magpul bottom metal to my Remington 700P. Everything was going well, and the bottom metal dropped in perfectly when I was done, until I attempted to put the action screws in. The longer action screw that goes right behind the trigger had no problems but it appears that the short forward screw does not want to go far enough to even catch any threads. I have since dremeled out a small portion of the bottom metal it-self which has just barely allowed the threads to catch allowing it to be tightened down. My question to you guys is, how far does the screw need to go to be able to safely operate the firearm without worrying about it?

general rule in engineering is for thread engagement to be 1.5 times the screw diameter.......they are 1/4-28 screws....so youd want a minimum of 3/8" thread engagement.......or 11 threads

My magpul 700 stock went together easily.
Was there anything like old bedding material left on the reciver or lug possibly?

I'm working with the long action magnum bottom metal and a Remington 700 police chambered in .300 win mag. The factory stock had some left over material that was blocking a bit of it. I finished dremmeling it out about half an hour ago and the screws go in factory deep now. The problem I was having was that the magpul bottom metal was taller than the factory floor plate which in turn held the screws too far from the action to be able to catch threads. After dremmeling and sanding the area that is too tall down enough, I finally got the screws to go deep enough. That was the only modification needed on the bottom metal itself, the rest was done to the stock just making room for the larger bottom metal. It works now and just required a bit of thinking as to what was causing the hang up.

Also, I am using the factory police stock not the magpul hunter.

Thanks for the heads up.
I havent installed a box mag yet. So may have same problem.
I didnt recognize the (p) i figured 308, lots of difference
Been trying to decide on the mag rout i think there's more room in standard bottom metal for custom loads, still learning.

I'm gonna post a full length walk through tomorrow with pictures and maybe a video (we will see) on what I did. I have yet to find any how-to's for the long action magnum only the .308 version and that was not at all helpful for my situation, whole different animal. :)

Took me a while, magpul bottom on your stock.
I would like to see the work involved, have done similar work not on stocks.
