Gunsmithing Making a Barrel vise/action wrench

Re: Making a Barrel vise/action wrench

What I did was get two blocks of aluminum 3wx3hx3 long. I clamped the together in a vice and drilled at the parting line. I drilled it until it was slightly smaller than the barrel diameter then smoothed it out . I then laid a sheet of lead tape in the groove and clamped it in my vice. that was to hold the barrel. since my barrel was shot out I cut it off and used a socket and an impact to remove it. This was on a beat up 91/30.
You can use the same method to build an action wrench as I did with the vice blocks. Just make the blocks slightly longer and drill and tap one of the blocks to accept 1/2 inch bolts and thread the center between the bolts to accept a 1/2 or 3/4 pipe thread to use as a handle.
Just a thought

Re: Making a Barrel vise/action wrench

I bored a 2x4" piece of cd steel to fit the reciever and another to fit barrels, which use bushings. I then bored and tapped holes to make the clamps.....then I drilled half of the hole oversized and split the blocks. I have another vice I made that can fit barrels or actions because it uses wood inserts with lead buffers. It is basically two parallel plates with 4 studs to clamp the blocks together, one plate is tapped for studs.....the other is drilled oversized to allow studs to slide.

Re: Making a Barrel vise/action wrench

As far as the action wrench side goes, I made one today I thought turned out quite well.

Basically took a piece of 3/4 drill rod, turned it down to .696. Stuck it in the mill and centered it, cut a .441 wide slot about 2" long with a 3/8" endmill. Surfaced down a piece of 1/2" steel 1"x2" to 0.441 thick. Put that piece on the belt sander and rounded the ends to match the ~.2 radius in that slot.

Pressed that piece into the bar, chucked it up in the lathe, and turned down the flat piece to the 0.98 diameter that the bolt lugs are. Had to cut a notch on the right side of it for that slot in the raceway also.

Finally cut a hex on the end so I can put a torque wrench on it (5/8).

Opinions on whether I should heat treat it or not? Im a little concerned about it twisting.
