Making a Overall Length Guage

Re: Making a Overall Length Guage

I take it one step further than what was shown in the video. I take a hex nut and drill a hole through one face. The hole is sized smaller than the bullet diameter so it intersects the ogive on the bullet. It provides a more repeatable way of measuring OAL and eliminates any inconsistencies from bullet tip deformation. The draw back is your measurement is always referenced to the hex nut so don't loose it. I also make a "dummy" cartridge with the bullet crimped in the case. Using a dummy for reference really makes adjusting the seating die very fast and error free. You can also drill an additional hole in one of the other faces that is slightly larger than the fired case neck diameter that allows the nut to rest on the shoulder of the case. This will give you a good way to measure how far back you are moving your case shoulder when sizing.
