Guys,
I have a friend @ work who's father just passed. His father served in the military in some fashion (dont know right now). Anyway, he has some casings of the blanks fired at the funeral. He has asked me to make keychains out of them. I really want to do this right. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or hints on how to do this?
Thanks in advance,
Rick

I agree with the acrylic plaque of blanks. It looks timeless and very classy.

I've got a 556 casing on my keychain, and over the past year, its gotten pretty beat up. Something with meaning like that shouldnt really get strapped to a bunch of hammers and thrown in your pocket

I've got some from the funeral of one of our motor officers that I'm going to make bell clackers out of for the other motor guys. They have Gremlin bells on their bikes. I'll try to take some pics and post what I'm doing when I get started.

I cut off the primer end, smash them flat, round the corners and stamp them for guys.

Phylodog,
I really like that myself! I will show my friend a photo of what you have done there, may contact you if he likes it.

As far as the other ideas on acrylic, I will also mention those as well. Its not really mine to say what to do with. My friend asked me and I will do whatever I can to help him make it into something he likes.

thanks again and keep the ideas coming....

My cousin had my Uncles engraved with his dates and gave one to all of us.

Not an idea for a key chain, but another idea.

Pop the primer, drill the flash hole out to pocket diameter (0.210").

Next, take an approximately 1" length of 0.1" Dia. copper wire and fold it in half, then fold the open ends out 90* approximately 0.21" from the tip so it resembles a "T".

Now use a long pair of needle nose pliers to push the closed end of the wire through the widened flash hole from the inside, then use an awl to force the wire halves open and create a loop.

If you wish to deter denting, simply fill the case with epoxy to make it more ridged.

I know they are blanks, but could you trim the top of the case and mount a bullet in the end? And then put the sling stud in the end?

It'd look something like this:

this is simple and classy, I like this the best. You can also get creative on what you stamp on the front and back, personalizing each one to an extent.

Nothing fancy but here is a few that I did the other night with a few pieces of brass that were no good anymore. Just drilled a hole through the head and primer pocket and thats pretty much it. The .300WM I am going to hang from the rear view mirror or something as its a little big to be stuffing in the pocket.
