Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Think I'm going to try this out next week at the range. Looks like alot of fun. I have a question...in stage 2, there is a value for no shoot and for white spaces. If you miss the number and hit the white space do you count it as a no shoot (-5) or 0 points?

Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Says on the target instruction's it's a zero point value.

Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Maybe I should clarify, sorry.
What would be considered a no shoot? Forgetting the number? Shooting the wrong number? Missing the number? If you miss the number and hit the white, is it no points or would you consider it a no shoot because you did not hit it?
Do you shoot again?

Hopefully T/P will chime in as there were some good opinions and questions on last month's targets about counting points.

Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

It is -5 points if you shoot a wrong number.
It is 0 points if you shoot a white space.
You get 1 shot per number.

If you miss, hitting another number, that's -5; if you miss, hitting a white space, that's 0; if you hit the correct number that's +5 points.

At least that's what I got out of the rules. I hope that is the info you were looking for.

not part of the comps but i couldnt resist

is a 25M offhand 5 shots on a SSAA 25m/50m target. note the 10.1 ring is just larger that a 22lr round so that a perfict bull will leave a red ring around it.

Alright, I'm bit...That was F^^kin fun!

Here you go:
Ruger 10/22
GM 20" .920 Barrel, VQ Trigger, R/T bed Stage 2, etc...
64 Degrees
Wind: SSE 14mph, gust to 23 mph (had a few...)

Stage 1: 10 pts
Stage 2: 40 pts
Stage 3: 10 pts
Stage 4: 0 pts
Stage 5: 60 pts
Total Pts: 120 Pts.

Position: Bench with Bi-Pod, rear bag
Optic: 4.5-14x42 Hawke Tactical 30 Sidewinder

Here's the target:
MarchTarget50yd.jpg

If you break the line you get the points? That is how I read it, however the cold bore shot broke the line, but the hostage takers, I broke the line on all three, but only one was clearly in the eye area for 20 pts so that is how I counted it. Let me know if my math is wrong.
Thanks.

Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Score for stage 5 should have been 60 and stage 2 should be 40 because of the 5 point penalty for hitting the "15" square.

Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Bubbajoe, thanks for your modesty, but I think if you plugged those bullet holes they would be breaking the line. Lacking an official plug you could stick a .22 cartridge in the hole.
By the shape of those holes, I think the grain of the paper is helping create the illusion that the bullets did not cut the line.
Nice shooting

This is the best I've scored on this target. Howevever I feel that the score is better than my shooting. There was alot of stuff going on arround me and it was easy to be distracted. I was completely present and focused on the challenging shots, and only 80% present on the 'easier shots. I allowed distractions to affect the mental side of the equation. The physical side of me was 'ON' today and getting good contolled surprise releases. My focus was only 80%. If I had been in the game mentally I think I had the oprtunity to clean the target.......oh well coulda woulda shoulda!!

Total Score: 226-9x

Notes: I origionally shot this target at 50 yards and was too all over the place to really justify using that target for this comp. So I tried my hand at it again, but at 25 yards this time, and recieved a much better score. Hopefully the addition of a sling next time will improve my steadiness as I was struggling to keep the crosshairs on target at all for everything but bulls 4 and 5. Kneeling wasn't quite as bad as sitting and standing were though, but even then it was still all over the place.

NOTE ANY PENALTIES: I lost 20 points by missing the 3/4" circle two shots in Stage 3, I missed the 20 point ring of Stage 4 (shot at the 30pt ring just for fun and hit it) so I lost those 15 earned points, and for whatever reason I magically hit the first hostages right shoulder in Stage 5 and honestly lost my temper because that was just FUBAR and shot off the other two hostages in rapid fire mode and got both of them.

Overall, if it weren't for a few screw ups on my part, this could've been a really good target. Oh well, you win some and lose some. Next month is another opportunity!

A I appologize, I would really love to post pics of my targets (even if they aren't anything to be worried about for the other competitors) for proof, but I still cannot yet. You'll just have to take my word on these terrible scores

Just cut the right edge of cold bore (not a true cold bore) and missed the 6. The difference (and huge score...for me) is what I believe to be the 2 biggest stages: 3 & 4. I stopped before I missed and all 5 were in the circle. Good day.

Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Hey haptoshoot, on stage 3, you got +40 for the 4 in the circle and -10 for the miss resulting in +30 for that stage.

Still great job overall. Ha I hope to break 200 soon but im still too scared to go for the 30pt dot...maybe next month.

On the second target I would score that 110pts. The misses on stage 4 subtract 20. Any miss on the 5th stage eliminates any points from that whole stage. The last hostage looks like it could have been hit but I cant tell. Its a good start!

I cant wait to get out and shoot this!

Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Two targets because i competed against my brother. One target each, with the same gun and the same day.

That last shot that supose to eliminate the rest brake the line so i count it as ok. But there is no problem.

Is a start i think if i can get a better ammunition the groups will be better and there is no going to be so much flyers.

Re: MARCH 2011 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Finally got around to shooting one of our SH matches this year.

The rifle I used was one of my Marlin 80DL's, which came to me with the Peep Sight setup replaced with open iron front and rear sight's. So this is the way I shoot it - Open Iron.

These rifles were made between 1940 - 1964. No way to tell for sure what year it was made as Marlin did not serial number these rifles. It was not required back in those day.

For a vintage rifle that shows its age, I think it shoots pretty good. Anyway, I'm happy with the results for not doing this 4 position shooting for a'while. It's great to get back to it, and the basics.

That was the first outing with this rifle. I zeroed it using a steel prairie dog target then a couple of 5 shot groups on paper. I'd like to tweak my 50 yard zero a bit as I think it might be impacting 1/2 a minute to the left.

The scope on there is temporary and I had issues with it not holding zero in the past on a 30.06. Spotting my own hits I noticed a few that went pretty far left. By the time I got to Stage 5 I was compensating and missed all 3 BG's.

I know I'm submitting a DFL target, but I had a heck of a lot of fun shooting.

The grid is a pain.

Yep, March was a good month for participation, and we welcome NUTT, TCKEV64, LAYINCLOSE2HELL as new shooters to the matches.

Thirteen different shooters participated in March, with at least 1 entry for every short range match available. If my math is correct, that's 400 to 425 rounds shot down range, and 22 entries amoung those 13 shooters. I think that may be a record....or at least pretty darn close.

April showers bring may flowers, here in the Northeast we also hope the Winter will end too! Hope that Easter Bunny brings all the "good eggs" something special.
