Right now I have a Mark 4 6.5-20 great scope no complaints at all, but would selling it and paying $2000+ for a S&B pmii 3-12x50 be a mistake? I'm really digging the pmii.

Rifle Scopes Mark IV to a PMii?

First off you have a good scope already. However, if you have a hole burning in your pocket get it. I got rid of my Leupolds a ways back to replace them with S&Bs and they are great scopes. That being said I would like to see the Mark 6 to see how it stacks up to th S&Bs.

Yeah. I have to agree with you. I really like the PM2's but there's nothing wrong with my Mark IV. But looking at what $2000+ can buy in its place. My brain hurts thinking about it.
That's a big difference in magnification (6.5-20 vs 3-12)! I guess it depends on the application (distance and type of shooting you do) as well as personal preference.
I thought I was happy throwing a Henny or S&B on everything til I realized my Non-Typical was simply unbalanced and top heavy. Replaced that one with an F1 and fit the mold way better, especially being able to mount a 30mm lower.

Why a 3-12? If I were upgrading scopes I wouldn't downgrade power. 3-20 or 5-25 would be better choices. I had a 6.5-20x Leupold and it's a good scope but not in the same class as a PMII. Only you can make the decision if it's the right one for you.
That's exactly what I was getting at. Why are you downgrading in power? While lower magnifications definitely have an edge in short range situations it's still nice to have the higher magnification when you reach out in range. What distance do you typically shoot at?

I agree with Rob, why not the 5X25. With a first focal plane scope you can turn down the power and still use your mil marks. I also sold my leupolds to upgrade to the S&B and it was worth it.
I sold two NXS scopes for a PM-II. I'm much better off now. But the only S&B I'd look at is the 5-25x, you'll not see as much advantage on a 3-12x.
S&B 3-12x56 pm2 mil/mil listed in the optics for sale section if that's the route you plan to go.
What mk4 do you have? Sfp LR/T? FFP ER/T? 34mm ER/T with locking turrets?
While the PMII is an order of magnitude better than a standard lr/t, the 34mm with locking turrets gives up nothing except illumination and zoom ratio when realistically comparing the two.
In reality a smidge of clarify, illum, larger zoom ratio is not worth the extra juice unless you have somebody footing your bills or you absolutely depend on such features for a duty weapon. Would a pmii be nice to have, hell yeah, but would a er/t m5a2 with a thousand to blow on training or competition make you a better shooter at the end of the day.
Hell one could take a 10x super sniper and probably out shoot half the internet if they get some good training and pushes themselves to get fundlementaly better.
Gucci gear is great and all but there have been some phenominal shooters doing incredible things with essentially modified deer rifles and 10x scopes for generations in combat. No reason one can't excel with something less than a pmII in a civilian role.
Hell,i would venture to say that 80 percent, of the pmii's on the for sale section are new or prestine condition. A lot of good they do sitting the safe.

it's going to go on a 308, and be shot out to 1000 yards. The mark 4 I have is a LR/T, no illuminated, second focal plane.
You won't need illumination if you have clip on NV or thermal. Or even better have both.
I agree the S&B's are nice but every time I ask myself why I missed a shot in practical training it's never due to lack of scope quality/features. I switched all my SFP mil/moa Mark 4's to FFP mil/mil Mark 4's and don't see the need to spend double for my needs.
All my SFP Mark 4's ended up on my pellet rifles and are very happy there.
