Re: Marksmanship
Its funny that this keeps getting brought up and the only ones doing anything about it is the SOC/SOF communities. They are all switching to the .45 vs. 9mm and looking in multiple directions to replace the 5.56 with a heavier hitting round. I know there is the proverbial "one shot stop", but I have winessed the same effect as described in his notes of shooting an adversary multiple times with 5.56 doing nothing more than slowing him down. We had actually adopted a thing we called the "Jason Voorhees drill', just keep shooting until he didnt move, then do a dead check on him to make sure, which was effective, did the job, but felt "sloppy". The 6.8 had very reasonable improvements but nothing did the trick of the 7.62x51, although the Beo was VERY effective, just not something you wanted flying around inadvertantly, works well on vehicles. I have wondered why this sort of thing has be going on for so long without any recourse from the "higher ups", I mean we have been in Iraq and Afghanistan for how long now ? I have my own opinion WHY, from having discussions with certain civilian reps from a few of the branches of service. One is the money, new weapon systems cost money, a new caliber, more money, with our current uhhhh "commander" (trying to avoid political discussion just making a point) the military funding is going, down. Those of you that are contractors probably have noticed it getting harder and harder to find jobs and the job "pool" is getting smaller whether it be for training instruction or overseas operations, its dwindling due to the cost cutbacks, and the ENORMOUS red tape that units are having to wade through to get something as simple as vehicle parts. And secondly but deffinately not last, I had asked several of the so called civilian "reps' whose job is to seek out new technology for our warfighters, "why not a larger caliber?" the reponse I recieved from the civilians that were never in the military was this, "there isnt anything wrong with the current 5.56, it does the job" and "we are trying to improve the systems already here in our armament"... whaaaaaaaaaaat ??? (wasnt there a petition somewhere to bring out the huge cache of M-14's somewhere?)I shit you not I almost puked on the guys shoes... I dont know if that gave me a very comforting thought after hearing that from someone that is supposed to be looking out for our boys. I could go on for hours about this, voicing my anger and frustration over the perhaps "misunderstood stupidity?", but I am just beating a dead horse and preaching to the choir...
