my dealer called me this morning and told me he couldnt find any savage stevens in 25-06,did some looking around and found a marlin x7 with a camo stock for a little bit higher price tag, looked at alot of reviews on it and there is no negative points on this rifle, was wondering if anyone had on and how are they

Re: marlin x7

I have a marlin XL7 (which i think is almost the same as the X7) in 30-06 and it isn't a bad gun. It's nice and light and accurate enough to be used as a hunting rifle. I wouldn't, however, call it a precision rifle. Also, unlike the savage, there is really no practical way to upgrade it. If you just want a hunting rifle then I would go ahead and get the Marlin. If not, then I would wait it out for the savage or look at getting a 700.

Re: marlin x7

I have one in 308 sitting in my safe. I may eventually put a McGowen barrel on it and turn it into a 243.

The stock on these rifles is poor. Very soft. Boyd's does now offer aftermarket stocks however.

Trigger gaurd is plastic and will eventually break.

Mine has a real problem with barrel heating. Gun will shoot sub MOA with handloads, but 8 minutes cooling between shots is required. Any less and the groups spread randomly as the barrel heats. This was the issue that finally got it retired to the safe.

Aftermarket for these is lacking compared to the Savage or Remington as well.

I would look another direction.

Re: marlin x7

I'd check Able ammo and several other large outlets. Able is listing a number of Savage 25-06 as in stock. Bud's gunshop has them listed as in stock, @ 332.00. Maybe your dealer just didn't have enough time to do a lot of checking. Between the two, the Savage is a more proven system, and usually very accurate, right out of the box.

Re: marlin x7

I have the Marlin XL7 in 25-06 and a couple of Stevens 200s in 7mm-08 and 270Win. Marlin stock is better than stocks on Stevens 200....and Marlin factory trigger is superior, being adjustable while the Stevens is not. Both Marlin and Stevens shoot accurately, but my Marlin 25-06 has produced better groups at 100 yards than my Stevens, trying various reloads in them. By the way, have a Savage Axis too and think the Marlin is better than it too. Get the Marlin.
