match bullet for 1000y that will act like vmax

hi all
probably asking the impossible, but looking for a bullet that can shoot to 1000y for target work and also be used for fox/rabbit up to 300y and fragment like a vmax
all from a .308.
been using the 110vmax with excellent results ,<300y, thought about the 168amax but i see several people on here dont rate it for 1000y,
has any one used the 185 laupa on game?

178 A-MAX will do a deer or other critter handily, flies well past 1K in a 308.

I've hit a couple deer at 4-500 yards with my 308 shooting 168 a-max they dropped like a bag of potatoes.

Not sure about the ones for a 308, but I use the 162 Amax in my 7-08. Shot a few groundhogs last year in the 200-300 range and created some beautiful gut piles. Pretty devastating from what I saw. Also do a number on deer. If you're worried about pelts though, don't use them.

As Doc'and Beretta say the 178's will fly past 1k without any trouble at all, and Hornady load the 168's in their TAP loading, so they should come apart with style at a decent speed.
Your only problem is with "shoot through" so watch your back stop and you should be GTG....

l've used the 120 v-max in my 7-08 and it would shoot 2" at 600yrd if l did my bit on club days, it's a shame there's not a 150/155 v-max and the chance to give it a good hard kick...

I use 155 BTHP Scenars on deer and hogs. All of the ones I have hit end up in the freezer, and are D.R.T on the spot with a nice exit wound. This is the same handload I use in the F T/R class. My 2 cents....

The 168 warnings for 800+ yards is only for the 168 SMK's, the base geometry on them is what makes it unstable as it enters transonic range.

The 168 Amax will fly just dandy to 1000y from a 308.

The progression started like this

"168 SMK out of a 308 at sea level is unstable past 800y"

Turned to

"168 SMK out of a 308 is unstable past 800y"

Turned to

"168's don't fly well past 800y"

Shoot the 168's and you will be fine, or you can go with the 155 Amax, 178 Amax, or 155 Scenar.

My personal feeling is that if you have 2 distinct applications (pelt hunting and target shooting at LR) then I see no issue with shooting 110 Vmax at the yotes and 168's or 178's at 1000y.

If the 110 Vmax is the ideal bullet for your short range stuff, then run it.

My brain must have farted last night (too much caffiene and night shifts), so here l go again.....

My L/Distance/Deer load is with the 155 scenars and my fox load is a 110v-max which shoots to 1.25" above the scenars at 100mtrs. So the 110's are point and shoot out past 250yrds before correction....

That way all l have to do is sub one for the other whenever l need to...... Simple/ well better then the bollocks l was on last night as least.....

Bohem, We don't normally shoot for pelts over here just vermin destruction (l've not seen a good price on a fox skin in years) And l should have realised that l've got a box of 155amax's on the bench for a pal to use (bugger my memories slippin' bad these days) but your reminder of the A's kicked my brain back in tonight.
