a while ago i saw a way to convert a mauser to take m14 magazines
here it is
has anyone done this? any suggestions on what kind of metal/spring to use and where to get them? could i use TIX solder or would it have to be welding? hyugo (the guy who came up with the conversion) hasnt replied to anything ive sent him

Re: Mauser M14 magazine conversion

ok so ive got some baker rod stock and bar stock and a package of wolff springs. i hope these will be good enough i dont see why they would be. i want to find a welder in my area just to be safe. i dont know if silver solder would be enough.

Re: Mauser M14 magazine conversion

Silver solder does not make nice butt joints, it's best strength comes from shear loading. You can braze the pieces together too, and they're probably going to be strong enough.

A third option if you don't want to get a welder involved is to use brazing rod and then use a doubler on the outside of the mag box over the joint you're brazing together. Just make it out of the same thickness as the mag box and inlet the stock for it. You won't be able to see it when it's in the rifle.

Brazing will do fine for the rest of the operations as well.

Re: Mauser M14 magazine conversion

so ive got a plan now. i have it all ready to go i just have to find a welder (i have a few other things to weld so i figured might as well). my girlfriends dad can probably do that so i think ill get off free. right now ive been removing some metal with a dremel tool. i have the bottom opened up just enough i just have to get that cut all the way down. whats the best way to do it? i figured maybe a drill press or somethin or maybe a disc grinder. any input?

You'll learn soon enough that the bold text above is never true...

Back on topic: Are you saying you need to figure out how to cut the bottom metal in half to take the space out of it?

Hack saw, band saw, some kind of metal saw. Disc grinder is going to make a mess of it unless you're good with one.

Just a thought though, how are you going to get the bottom metal holes to line back up? Cut the front tab off, lengthen it, reweld it back into place? You might get less work involved if you just put a spacer in the front or back of the magwell and braze/weld it in place. Just a thought and making sure you have all the bases covered before doing something that can't be undone.

Re: Mauser M14 magazine conversion

i mean getting the metal out of the bottom of the reciever. i have to cut a bit out to allow the magazine to fit.

as for keeping the holes lined up i already brazed in a spacer but i want to get it welded in. just to make sure they line up im going to have them screwed in then the sides tacked together.

Re: Mauser M14 magazine conversion

probably going to stop by a CNC shop sometime soon. im goin to see if he might be able to just make me one. if not he does welding and he could proably help me remove the metal from the reciever.
