I was given a Mauser Modelo Argentino 1909 in a 6mm-284. I don't know how many rounds it has and I am thinking of chambering it in a a 6.5x55 for a light hunting rifle.

I don't know anything about Mauser actions. Will it handle modern loads in the 6.5x55? What exactly is a Mauser Argentino?

First, I don't know jack didly about mausers other than your mauser was made in Argentina. The 6mm-284 is a fairly modern round so I would think if it can handle that it could certainly handle the 6.5x55 which as you may know is an old Swedish mauser chambering.

That rifle may not have been made in Argentina. DWM made them originally - look at the markings on it. They are considered one of the best mausers for 'sporterizing'- primarily because of the bottom metal. That and the fantastic level of metal work in general. Should work great for a 6.5x55. I have two actions on the shelf for a 'rainy day' project and was going to put one in a 6.5x55 myself. The other one gets to be either an '06 or a 7x57

A good smith will give you guidance on if it needs to be re hardened or not - probably not but ya never know.

The modelo 1909 Argentine Mauser I owned was made in Germany and was of very high quality.

If your rifle has this manufactures stamp on the side (Waffenfabrik Mauser-Oberndorf a/n) you should have a very good action.

Mine was chambered in .30-06 and was rock solid. You should have no problems with 6.5 x 55, or any non-magnum cartridge for that matter.

Re: Mauser Modelo Argentino 1909

The 1909 is great for a custom rifle. That being said, there are reports that some of the actions are soft and may exhibit lug setback. Some gunsmiths routinely have them re-heat treated before rebarreling. Best to have it checked out before proceeding.
