Hello all, I could use a little help here. I am on a tight budget but would still like to get into a .308 and I have narrowed it down to these three.

I would like to know OUT OF THESE 3 which one would be the best starter rifle for me?

Maverick 22" bbl 4+1

Savage Axis 22" bbl 3+1

Mossberg 22" bbl 4+1

Would this be it

Re: Maverick vs. Savage vs. Mossberg

you still want the stevens

you're looking at all the cheap rifles that are made to be basically disposable... no options and upgrades avail able... the mossberg, marlin, etc are cheap deer rifles w/ no aftermarket support.... remington and Savage/Stevens have support, but not on the 770 or Axis/Edge....

the stevens 200 is the least expensive rifle to start with.

up from there is a Savage or Remington 700

Re: Maverick vs. Savage vs. Mossberg

Triggerwise, it's the old Savage, but it also uses scope bases that conform to the new Savage standard (round top front and rear).

Of all the rifles you've mentioned so far, the Stevens is the only one that's easy to upgrade, and the only one that's worth doing it to.

They are all actually quite good enough for their niche, which is as a bargain basement hunter, but for upgrading to something more serious, they just don't make the grade the way the Stevens does, and does pretty well, I might add.
