I have searched and searched and cant find any answers..
I am trying to work up a load using varget and the 168gr amax.
Hornady manual shows 44.0 being max
Hodgdon site show 45.0 for a ttsx and 46.0 smk?
I am trying to do the OCW load develop way. And i need the max load to begin.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

For my savage 10pc, in winchester brass, with a WLR, seated at 2.820 I load with 45 grains of varget. IMO its a hot load and I dont shoot the Amax much. My normal load uses a Nosler or Hornady bthp 2.810.

From my experience, 44.0 grains of Varget seems to be a consistently good charge in all .308 Win 168gr loads. I'd start around 43 and work the load from there.

I used 44 grains of varget. I'd start at 42 and work up.

Hodgdon max is 46.0gr Varget under a 168 SMK.

44.4gr Varget under a 168 Amax/ELD is a clone load for factory 168gr TAP.

I ran as high as 45.7gr Varget under a 168 Amax/ELD without pressure issues in factory 700 chambers.

FWIW: in a 20" AAC-SD, 44.4gr Varget gave me 2550fps and 45.7gr gave me 2640fps.

There is no max charge weight for a given powder.

Different headstamp brass has different internal capacity, bullets have different bearing surfaces, primers vary, rifle chambers are different from rifle to rifle, etc.

Work your way up to what your rifle says is max, watch for pressure signs, and play it safe.
