Suppressors Maxim Silencer

Re: Maxim Silencer

..

Know Doug (U.S. Firearms Corp.) well and allot about that can.
The story of that can starts here...

That is the design that translated into the off axis, capacity trough, that Osprey has carried forward.
The Maxim patent your interested in, with baffle improvements (Mark White) is a Yankee Hill product.
The original baffle arrangement was a series of washer "coils" and needed a refresh.

The difference between the upper baffle "straight tuck" and the lower baffle "coil tuck" is the issue of a significant increase in heat differential between the top of the can and the bottom trough. Volume is everything in this design and there wasn't much of it to work with above the projectile in the original baffle. The .45 auto front site is quite low.

Dr. Shush is a 100 year old and counting design.

The specs tell you just about all you would need to know.

Re: Maxim Silencer

Thanks, I was curious as to why I hadn't seen more of the offset designs. Maybe it's a manufacturing issue? Either way I saw one of these at a gun show in Denver on Saturday and the price was definitely right.

Do you know if it uses adapters for different threads? I have a number of 1911's but was also looking at an FN-P tactical to use it on.

Re: Maxim Silencer

..

There is nothing patently wrong with the offset design. But I think there is a question as to the appropriateness of this YH Maxim specific can on anything other than a prized vintage .45.

Now, be sure and look at the Osprey offering. With its off axis design, monoblock baffle and slab siding it is all together a different approach with some simular attributes. There is nothing about manufacturing that remains a challenge or a liability.

Nothing against the Maxim, just the opposite, I applaud having this can available to those that want to complete their period rigs. On the Woodsman, it is a dream.

There is allot of material on this subject to be found on other threads. I could brain dump here, but I sense you are starting to learn about various designs and I think you should research them all before somebody doses you with "the only correct answer" recommendations. I beleive you are the first to start a thread within this year on the YH Maxim.

Re: Maxim Silencer

Excellent info. Thank you again!

The one at the show was attached to a Glock, and in no way looked like a "dated" design.

I am still learning, and I spent a day searching for any thread on the maxim design so as not to be "that guy". But yes, I have much more to learn.

Re: Maxim Silencer

I think the main draw with the "maxim" design is retro looks and feel. Its a can design from the early 1900's (1910 I think) and appeals to those who like the older look. The offset setup is pretty good for keeping the sights visible while maintaining the volume of a larger can. As others have noted the idea has value and is in use today. I've got an Osprey for my .45 S&W M&P45 and it works great.
