mcgowen barrels?

Re: mcgowen barrels?

I am about to pull the trigger on one was well, very interested in what people have to say.

I am looking at a savage prefit 7mmrem mag, 28" 1-8 fluted varmint contour SS.

Re: mcgowen barrels?

I've had 3 (couple of 308 and a 7.62x39) and all have shot around 1/2" with FGMM (308s, 168gr) and under with handloads. The guy I sold my 7.62x39 rifle to said he was shooting around .3 (and sometimes better) with handloads. All of my barrels were delivered in 4-6 weeks.

That said, I tried a Lothar Walther on my 243 build and it has been great also.

Re: mcgowen barrels?

Plummed right, they are execellent, a builder here in town uses them exclusively, great luck.
And they are faster than normal.
I had a 30" 7mm SAUM, 180 Berger at 3180fps, no pressure. You'll be hard pressed to find published data that fast. Set it back 2&1/2', still shot 3160 for a total of 2900 rds.
I rebarreled it with a 25" Brux, barely getting 2900 out of same load.
You won't be disappointed.

Re: mcgowen barrels?

I have a McGowan 24" SS select bbl, 11* crown in 6x45 from Jim at NSS on the Savage site.
It does nothing but sub moa with all my loads from a 55g to 95g bullet.
Bore had zero chatter in it, perfectly smooth, sharp rifling etc.
Im having another one made from him.
