McMillan A-5 Stock for CMP 40x

Re: McMillan A-5 Stock for CMP 40x

I am in the same boat with the same plan......A5 to serve as a true trainer...My CC was charged on the 21st so I am hoping for delivery within the next two weeks or so!!!

No real words of wisdom for you....but I plan to wait until I have the rifle in hand 700 vs 722 don't entail huge differences and I dremel and some sandpaper should get it done....but I have waited a long time to get another 40x and the A5 is a lot of money.....be a shame for me to hack it up with a dremel....

Generally if it is a round bolt knob it is a 722 based action and a flattened bolt knob with knurling on top and bottom is a 700 based action....generally.

Re: McMillan A-5 Stock for CMP 40x

I just ordered one myself......

700 bdl inlet, pillars installed, full adjustable like my centerfire rig BUT with an MTU contour for the 40x's HB. MTU contour will be a little bigger than its needs to be for the HB but not by much. Figured to go with a standardized contour size incase I ever need/want to use the stock on a different rifle or need to resell the stock. Course the stock is going to cost 2x as much as the rifle did!!! On the other hand, given how the 40x's are already selling, this will now be my most valuable rig and is already the best investment I have ever made......don't ask me how my 401K is doing or how solvent my pension fund looks!!

I plan to shoot it and see how it does with the just the pillars before I think about bedding. Pics will of course follow when its all set up......

Posts: 107 We would need to know when you get yours if it has a straight bolt handle or a curved one and whether the safety is inside the tang or outside.

Re: McMillan A-5 Stock for CMP 40x

Foot print is basicly a Remington 700 SA for both. The early rifles came with a 722 style bolt and safety. The bolt handle came straight down and the safety extends out the RH side a little more than a 700. The problem is until you get your rifle you want know which you have. Many of these rifle have shown up with mis-matched bolts and triggers. So I would wait until I have the rifle before ordering any parts for it. The stock itself only needs a little cut to clear the safety and just a little extra room forward on the bolt clearance cut. Otherwise they are the same.
