I have a question about this stock. The McMillan website shows the stock with the adjustment knobs on the right side of the stock. And the thumbwheel would be on the left.

I swear ive seen pictures on SH on Adj A3-5 stocks with the thumbwheel on the right, and knobs on the left.

Do I need to specifiy to McMillan on what sides I want the adjust screws and thumbwheel?

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

Now you've confused me....I don't have a thumbwheel here to confirm.

The way I remember it is that the thumbwheel is round, so it sticks out both sides of the stock. The two set screws are able to be screwed in from either side, depending on whether you plan on shooting it right or left handed.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

thats what I thought jasonk, but from looking at pictures of adja3-5s on the hide i doesnt appear that way. Unless some of the stocks that im seeing are immitation a3-5's.

I havent seen an a3-5 from both sides. on some pictures the set screws are on the right, and in others they are on the left. but in all of the pictures I do not see holes in the stock for the set screws on both sides. the thumbwheel is always accessible from from both, but the set screws seem to one side or the other. hope that makes sense.

maybe somebody on here has an a3-5 that can post pictures of both sides of the stock.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

I have a McMillan M40 stock (Robar Sr-60) with that thumbwheel adjustment. *This is a left hand rifle* and the two tightening knobs are on the left. The thumbwheel sticks out both the left and right side.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

Here you go If you are thinking of getting this one. If I had to do it again. Don't get the thumb wheel. It's nice to move up and down, but the set screw come loose after a few shoots. I would get the one with the allen head adjustments.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

The thumbwheel sticks out on both sides of the stock so you can turn it with your fingers on one side and your thumb on the other.

Its' not just the A3-5. The set screws used on the saddle-type adjustable cheek rests do the same damn thing. I had an FNH A3 G (uses a McMillan A3 with saddle cheek rest), and a friend of mine has a thumbwheel-adjustable A5 and both of our thumbscrews loosen as well.

Not a "fix" but a work-around is to put some green Loctite on the threads and thread the screws back in. Once the Loctite dries you'll still be able to break the seal, but trhe residual Loctite in the threads will help keep the screws from shooting loose.

Next time I order an adjustable cheek piece stock I'm going to try the (Terry Cross) "Loggerhead" (as <span style="font-style: italic">Skyking</span> said) <span style="font-style: italic">"the one with the allen head adjustments"</span>.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

the terry cross hardware is the one you want, you have to use allen screws to loosen it, but you set the cheekpiece to the height you want then all you do is set a c-clip on the vertical shaft and you can take it off and go right back where you want it. you can't adjust on the fly, but to me it is a much more solid set up.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

The locking screws on my A5 loosen up too. But you know immediately if your cheek-rest has moved. It messes with your sight-picture if you have a good cheek-weld. I just adjust it back and lock 'em down again...

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

I carry a spacer block, made from a scrap of lumber, that I insert into the stock recess by first removing the rest. I then lower the rest into contact with the block and tighten the lock screws to a reasonable tension. A consistent and solid cheek rest adjustment us the result. Should I need to? Of course not, but I figure it's better to light one small candle than to rail against the darkness.

That's a Great Idea! Too often the simplest solutions elude us!

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

My 3/16" allen wrench is the "spacer" that works perfectly for my A3. I have a KMW on my A5, and agree its a great setup.

Look in yout kit for something that just fits under your setup when adjusted properly, and rock on.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5 question

For the people who have had issues with the thumbwheel adj piece coming loose, how old was your stock? I went ahead and ordered the adjustable piece on my A-5 after the lady at McMillan told me that they have recently redesigned it to not come loose. I wonder if anyone is having issues with the new style.
