McMillan Cheek Rest?

Re: McMillan Cheek Rest?

ive got one.
i can see what people would say about it being off center, as the screws tighten to the cheekpiece in the center of the stock... hard to explain without pictures

there rest is free floated around the outside of the stock, so if youve got a bony little head, then maybe you could tell the 1/8 inch difference of the cheekpiece being larger than the stock, i cant.

i picked the saddle over the integral because ive seen the internal ones frame come loose from the stock more than on this forum. if the saddle system breaks i still have a useable stock without it.

Never had any problems with mine on my A4. I like the saddle better than the intregal models. I use mine in the field and all shooting is either prone and sling supported. The only noteable mod I have done is switch out the knobs for 10/32 x 3/8" set screws on BOTH sides of the cheek rest. In the event I have to switch to support side shooting in a hurry, I don't have to worry about a knob digging into my jaw.

That's my .02 cents FWIW.

Re: McMillan Cheek Rest?

The integral rest is mounted with the block and a pedestal, and the pedestal's screw holes are transverse slots, allowing about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch worth of lateral adjustment for the block. The saddle system has no such lateral adjustment. I think it makes a valid argument in favor of the integral system, but some may also find it's not needed.

Also, I find that thumbscrew adjustment locks tend to slip. The two vertical rods supporting the integral system ride in corresponding vertical holes. I find that I can place spacers under those rods, and slippage is history. Since I have to move the block anyway, to remove the bolt, there's no issue for me about adding and removing those spacers. My base is a tall one (Ken Farrel 20MOA), and I find that a pair of 52SMK .224" projos make the perfect spacers.

Re: McMillan Cheek Rest?

Have McMillan make your stock inlet for a KMW Loggerhead adjustable cheekpiece. They have all the good features GregL pointed out (lateral movement, etc) and DO NOT break out of the stock. The vertical posts use a series of slots on one post and an e-clip to make repeatability a no-brainer.

Re: McMillan Cheek Rest?

Oh, and I modified mine by having a socket head screw made with a knurled top for too-less removal. The KMW stup comes with a sicket head screw that uses a 3/16 allen to remove.
