I just received a M40 A1 stock I won on Ebay. It has Wichita-like swivels, but the rear swivel is rigidly attached and the front is attached by two socket head screws (it does swivel). It is not a smear pattern stock, but it does not have the same look as my other two forest camo stocks. You can see the cloth matting in the finish. The bottom metal inlet fits the DD Ross botom metal I have on hand, except the rear part fits under flush. It came with a fiber (heavy cotton) sling with "MRT" stamped on it. The bedding is gray and not the dark gray of the new Marine Tex... much lighter. The action was fully bedded along its length and for a couple of inches in front of the recoil lug. Where the bedding ends in the barrel channel, it appears to have been cleaned up with a mill- nice and straight. The barrel channel is for a MTU or #7 contour. Inside the barrel channel is marked: DDR (bottom metal designation?); 06/07; B-7238; williams. It looks like the side opposite the ejection port was cut for a bolt release. It has a Pachmayr White Line recoil pad. There is also a swivel stud in front of the Wichita swivel in the forearm. This swivel looks original to my eye, but I could be wrong.
The question is, what do I have? Is it a military stock or just an older special order stock?
I would love to send Dick Davis an email with pics (can't get pics to load). Dick, if you see this I would appreciate your help.
