Just got my new HTG stock today, its for an early Rem 700 (sixties era). Pull off my old stock and drop the rifle into the HTG, with the tubbs lug, barrel contour, everything is nice and snug, it seems a good fit. I turn it over and the first thing I see is this gap around the tang, it looks like too much material was removed, heck theres even a gap under the tang. I think to myself its my fault, perhaps the tangs are different from the newer rifles, pull out a newer Rem 700 and theres not much difference. Pictures to follow later, cant' post them from this computer. Is this normal, ideas thoughts.
Thanks marty

ps behind the tang what appears in the pictres is what is, the start of what is another drill hole

Re: McMillan stock question/help

Do the bottom metal holes line up with the action? Is the stock cut for the larger lug? Was the action trued when the larger lug was installed?

Without seeing the pics I would bet the larger lug is messing you up.

Re: McMillan stock question/help

Call McMillan and request the green pigment color for that stock, they'll even send you a small patch kit to blend that area if you request it. The patch kit will have fiber glass, resin, hardener, a color to match your stock and a thickening agent. You can mix the resin, hardener and color to match then thicken the mix for a custom gel coat. Apply, let cure and wet sand, you'll be amazed with the finished product.

Re: McMillan stock question/help

William, thanks for the info, I would hate, after waiting since April for the stock to have to send it back. It really fits nice and snug, everything else looks good, except behind the tang, when I first saw the gap, I thought about paint but if they will send me a patch kit, that would be great. I have to say if I was to do it again I think I would send them the barreled action, well live and learn.

The great thing about the patch kit is you could mix it up and apply under the tang and blend to a desired effect. I'd prefer to first have it pillar bedded and then use the patch kit to finish it off. Function first

Re: McMillan stock question/help

The patch kit will fix that up but are you sure that is cut for a Remington? I mean there are lots of action that are the basic footprint of the Remington but slightly different as well.

William from from the pic it looks like a McMillan pillar is already there.

Re: McMillan stock question/help

Thanks again, thats great info, I used the score-hi bedding kit with pro-bed 2000 before on my first bedding job. I was quite pleased with the results, do you think this would be a suitable bedding compound for the McMillan stock, I had the stock installed with pillars already.
and thank God I don't have to send it back

Re: McMillan stock question/help

Not sure about the Pro Bed 2000, I've never used it. If you’re satisfied with it, I'd use it again. I tend to use Devcon 10110 for my bedding needs. By the looks of your stock McMillan just forgot to put the pigment color on the tang area. That’s what they use after inletting, cutting the ejection port and bolt handle cut out. Look close at these areas on your stock, you'll probably be able to see what I'm talking about.

I missed that. The OP even said he had them added. Just skim bed and touch up with the pigment color, you'll be GTG.

Re: McMillan stock question/help

There is an aluminum pillar already there, in the rear at least. I can tell by your last picture that that is a Rem inlet.
