Gunsmithing McMillan stock question

I recently bought a McMillan ADJ HTG from a friend who never used it. He ordered it with no swivel studs for some reason so I added my own. I was suprised when i started drilling holes that the whole stock seems to have a layer of aluminum just under the surface. The stock also weighs about 3-4 pounds (just guessing but it feels very heavy). Is this normal or is it "sniper" filled?

Re: McMillan stock question

If requested by a customer, we will put flat strips of steel bars into the stock if he so prefers. Some guys want to drill and tap it for attachements.

That is not a standard procedure we do on stocks however.
