Mcmillian Stock dillemia. Need opinions

Im scheduled to take my sendero 300 win mag to get the works done by a builder pretty soon. Rebarreled, Blue printed, trued bedded etc. my local shop got in a order of mcmillian stocks the other day. They have two long action a5's one has the adjustible cheek piece but has just the normal bdl bottom metal. the other is inleted for surgeon/ai style dbm metal. But has no adjustible cheek piece. Ive never had adjustible cheek before so its never bothered me. Ive had a dbm system on a savage 10lcp and it was kind of a bitch sometimes. Im gonna use it for long range target and hunting. Any opinions would help.

McMillan can most likely reinlet the BDL to a mag system of your choosing if you want to go that route. Or you could have Stockdoc here install an adjustable CP hardware in the other stock if you want to go that route. I really like my Surgeon DBM system though, it is extremely nice. I think either of those stocks would suite your needs, you just need to decide which one you like more and the features you want. Good luck.

I'd go with the one with the cheek piece. Inletting a DBM will be most certainly less expensive than installing a cheek piece.

+1 on what geb said. Just depends on what's more important to you at this present time. Adj Cheek or DBM.

I personally won't have any "precision" rifle without an adjustable cheek and LOP.

If I were in your dilemma, I would take the stock with the Adj. cheek and BDL....and then later on have it inletted for a DBM.
UNLESS, you don't like the adj. cheek hardware that comes with the McMillan's and you would prefer to have the KMW installed later.

Either way, you'll be happy...

I would personally go with the fully adjustable cheek piece and simply have the stock inletted by your gunsmith for the detachable box magazine system of your choice. Additinally, there is no comparison between Savages DBM system and that of Badger or Surgeon - they are light years beyond anything that Savage or Remington has to offer.

Best of luck with this build...the .300 Win Mag is an awesome cartridge.

Well if it is the Mcmillan cheekpiece setup you could always get the DBM inletted one so you can have the KMW cheekpiece system installed, as it is (seemingly) a much better system than the mcmillan one. I have a SA A3-5 and love it but the cheekpiece loosens after some shooting and needs to be retightened, while the KMW you tighten down and down have to worry about it.

Stock Doc does an outstanding job of installing the KMW CP system. Really like the "E clip" setup for returning to your heigth setting after removing it for cleaning.

If you are going to invest in a McMillan, get the exact one that you want. $150-300 difference in price beats buyers remorse for not getting what you wanted. Stockys has a bunch of a-5's in stock with the new marble color scheme. They were running free shipping for a bit, you may ask and see if they will do it for your order. DBM is convenient when hunting if you want to quickly unload your rifle, other than that I always find myself single feeding out in the field.

My only regrets about my A5 is that I didn't order it with pillars and especially the adjustable cheek piece. As has been said already, inletting for a DBM system is a small matter and is more of a luxury to me. The adjustable cheek piece on the other hand for me is a necessity. Now I'm using a stock pack and building up the height in order to have a good repeatable cheek weld, wish I had ordered it with the adjustable cheek, would have been much simpler from the start.

Info on my set up: Mine is a Remington 700 short action with a Seekins 20 MOA base, and Badger Std height rings holding a 50mm obj/30mm tube scope. This set up is about as low as you can get with a scope and STILL needs something to bring the cheek height up.

I would definitely go for the adjustable cheek over the DBM.
