Measuring bullets base to ogive

It probably depends on what you're wanting to do with the cartridge.

Something else to look at is the bullet base to seating stem variation. And the variation of where the seating stem contacts the bullet compared to where the ogive is on the bullet.

I used to spend a lot of time weighing bullets and sorting by ogive length and even weighing cases. At one point I went completely around the bend and sorted cases by wet capacity because 95% of my shooting is at 1000 yards and I wanted any advantage I thought I could get.....

The carefully sorted bullets and cases had better performance but not enough to justify the hours of pain and heartbreak that the sorting involved.

I think carefully weighed charges, consistent sizing, consistent neck tension and carefully seated bullets make the biggest difference down range, for me anyway.

I’ve recently changed over to Forster micrometer seating dies for all the cartridges I reload for because they seat the bullet on the ogive, giving me more consistent base to ogive lengths.

Anyhow, that’s my take.
