Metallic Reloading Whores

Re: Metallic Reloading Whores

I was in the local asshole's shop by my dad's house on Saturday. He had some LR and LR mag primers on the shelf @ 46 bucks a thousand. The shelves were packed with Hodgdon, Alliant and Accurate 1lb'rs. No Varget but I did snag 3lbs of 4831sc. They were $21/lb the rest of his stuff ranged 27-29 per pound.

When I brought the containers up he goes "Oh, looks like these have the wrong price tag on them, they're supposed to be $29."

5 minutes earlier he'd charged me $50 to transfer a pistol to my brother for his 21st birthday, a couple months ago he charged me $35 when I gave one to my dad for his 50th.

I didn't make a fuss at first but with the powder comment I told him "Sounds like everything in here is going up, even if the advertised price is competitive you like to gouge people once they walk up to the register."

I got my powder for $21 a lb, and he completely lost 3 more customers.

Re: Metallic Reloading Whores

Well, I saw a site Saturday, with large numbers of items, such as AR lowers, P-Mags, and other stuff at objectively reasonable prices. Pre-November '08' prices!

I began stocking up months ago on primers, powders, brass and bullets but not absurdly so IMO. My wife tends to differ...

Anyway, If the market finally equilibrates to the point where we see Quarter 1 2008 prices in a few months, I will gladly accept the mantle of chicken little for buying more than I immediately needed.

I don't think I'm going to regret my foresight in stocking up though.

Re: Metallic Reloading Whores

I was stocked up just fine for what I was loading. Plenty of LG pistol fixings and enough lg rifle to feed my hunting rifles along with a decent supply of factory .223 ammo. Now my lifetime supply of lg rifle primers isn't going to go too far feeding the new .308. At least my 16lbs of 3031 seems to be ok (at least to get started) with the 175 SMK.

Keeping my eye out for sm rifle, lg rifle, and some other powder for the .308 but not a crisis for 6 months or so.

My wife gave up and no longer talks about it.

Re: Metallic Reloading Whores

I consider myself fortunate that I bought a large quantity of powder and 210m primers just before things went to plaid.

I wasn't trying to hoard, I was just trying to pick up some components I knew I'd always be needing and save myself in hazmat shipping in the process.

Now I just wish I had stocked up on other components while I was at it. I saw the gun panic happening, and to a lesser degree the ammo panic (I kinda thought it'd be limited to military type calibers), but the reloading rush took me by surprise.

Re: Metallic Reloading Whores

I am lucky that I actually have a bunch of components at all levels . I was in the process of leaving town right after the election so I had stocked up on quite a bit of stuff just in case . I also lucked into a couple of deals lately to help round out what I felt I was short on . I am trying to get it all reloaded before I have to leave town again so I am not stuck in the position of having to buy factory ammo to feed my habit on the next trip out of town .

The fact that I have 8 brothers who seem to think I am their ,"Source" for reloading and gun stuff generally means I don't buy things in the smallest quantity possible either .

However did they come to that understanding? Are you an enabler of dependent behavior?

Re: Metallic Reloading Whores

I simply want as many guns with as many rounds of ammo pointing back out over the fence should the time come . I can't say as I have ever lost money on the deal but I sure haven't made any

Re: Metallic Reloading Whores

Whenever I buy a new gun I try to buy enough components to wear it out. I have always thought there would be a shortage like this. Now the only problem is I don't want to shoot any of it because I know I can't replace it!
