Hello all,

I am looking in to a new build. I am wanting to build a varmint rifle. Most shots will be on ground squirrels, rock chucks, an maybe a coyote, shots will be well under 400 yards. The big goal of this rifle will be to be light weight(would like under 7 with optic), under .5 moa out to 350 yards, and be able to vaporize my wanted target game. I believe this rifle will be chambered in 6tcu, 22-250 AI

What I am wondering is what action should I use, I am having trouble coming up with an action to base this on.(I don't want the bulky 700 action, I have plenty of rifles with them) So I am asking what are my options. I would like single shot.

O and I am willing to spend about 1k on an action for this rifle.

Thanks guys

Re: micro action?

You're asking a lot from a single-shot rifle chambered in a hot round. Why not build something off a CZ 527 and use a .223-based case? Or maybe a .204 Ruger to get you the performance you want in a smaller package?

Re: micro action?

I have a thompson contender in with a 18" 223 bbl that fits that bill nicely. Meets your weight specs, is a single shot, and not a rem 700. .5 moa...sometimes, its so damn light and narrow its pretty twitchy for group shooting. It is damn sure minute of coyote though. I am certain someone makes a 6tcu barrel for them too.

Re: micro action?

Contact Richard Spurril at Dakota Firearms. They own Nesika actions now. They built this 6.5 Grendel for me. This mis the Nesika J action and will only take .223 length cartriges. They do offer it in 6mmBR as well as other small rounds. Good luck!

Re: micro action?

I often read posts like this one and then take a look at what Savage offers; to see if there's a ready-made solution already on the books.

In this case, no; but they do sell something that comes fairly close.

By close, I mean a Savage Model 25 Walking Varminter. It's a purpose-built lightweight repeater action that comes in, minus scope and rings, at 6.9lb. Price lists at $551 for the entire rifle. Calibers are .222, .22 Hornet, 5.7x28, .223, and .204 Ruger.

While I realize these are not the calibers you mentioned, I'd be very quick to select the .223 for the applications you have in mind. It's the chambering Sierra uses for accuracy testing with their .22 caliber bullets, and that's a fairly lofty recommendation in my book. Varmint termination to 300yd, and maybe some beyond, is its specialty. I have found to my own disappointment that the .22-250, while being a superb varmint round, is hard on barrel throats; and tends to heat up the barrel too fast for sustained accuracy when sustained fire is required.

I recognize the pride that comes from specifying out a custom build.

I also wonder sometime if the results justify the costs involved in reinventing what is already a pretty good wheel. The money saved can buy a lot of reloading gear and components.

I consider my rifles as tools, rather than jewels. For me; their beauty is in their performance. I realize this is not the only, or maybe even the best, approach. But it works very well for me.

Re: micro action?

I helped design/build the Dakota Arms Predator actions.

Glen Harris and Cyle Miller were the two head honchos on the project.

Essentially its a Dwarf Nesika with some influence from Sako thrown in for taste.

Dakota still sells the snot out of them so I guess that could mean they are popular and work pretty well. You can run up to .480 bolt face cartridges not to exceed 22-250 length. They are intended for lighter calibers.

Hope this helps.

CZ 17 Ackley Hornet... never regretted making this. Makes rodents explode, stops coyotes in their tracks.

Very nice. Can you give me more details? That looks like the same action as a CZ 527... who's the smith, and who made the stock?

Re: micro action?

lf you're going to look at the CZ 527 take a little look at either the .22cal or 6mmPPC's in a 22 length barrel or above, as the 527's chambered for the 30 Russian it would make a fun unit to run.

CZ hornet action, PacNor barrel, CZ kevlar stock ( HS Precision I think ) I did the barrel work and assembly. Thanks

Re: micro action?

I've got an Encore chambered in 6mm BR from Bullberry , the barrel is 20" full bull and with a 4-12 variable it weighs about 9lbs , im sure with a skinny barrel and lighter scope you could drop at least a couple pounds.
Its very very accurate shooting 55gr Ballistic Tips out at 3500fps and im sure would give a coyote major trouble at 400yds

Re: micro action?

You said a single shot action so maybe look for a XP100 action. They are fairly stiff and have been made into decent shooters. If you can deal with a repeater, a Remington Model 7 action could make a sweet walking varminter. A 22 PPC or 22 BR would be a great combination. If you are only looking for 350 yards, the 223 or 222 Rem will serve you fine.
