Is there a rule of thumb for placement of a micro red dot BUS on an AR15 - in front of the scope, behind the scope, on the hand guard, not on the handguard? Any input would appreciated. Thanks!

If you have a super strong handguard, i.e. a DD RISII, KAC, Geiselle, Hodge, etc. rail mounting is not a problem. You can mount it directly off the scope tube or directly on various mounts as well. Most people seem to mount them near the front of the scope though that is not rule of law.

Well it's shooters choice but here is some thoughts.

I prefer running the MRDS off of the primary optic tube, sitting at the 45 between the turret
and closer to the shooter. Reasons for this placement is as follows:

Pros
- Having the MRDS close to the shooter provides a sight picture with a large field of view
- The movement of the rifle and the shooters head is more economical motion when compared to MRDS mount on the receiver/handguard
- Better situational awareness due to the "heads up" posture
- Mount high on the primary optic clears lights, lasers and UNS that will obscure MRDS mounted on a lower plane
- Passive NODs engagements through MRDS is easy while MRDS mount low on the receiver/hand-guard is difficult at best.

Cons
- Requires some extra awareness of sight offset in close quarters engagements as the height over bore is probably in excess of +3"
(this really only comes in to play with small targets like the cranial vault, at very close distance but none the less needs to be observed)

Now obviously my advice here is taylored toward some pretty specific applications, take it with a grain of salt.

Btw, I'm a novice hunter and I want to check with you about my rifle. I read in this blog best red dot sight for ar15 that for my rifle, the best approach is 4-8 or 4-10 times. But I have never dealt with rifles, and I do not know what kind of sight is best to buy. Or maybe I should look for a better scope with a stronger zoom. And I know that it's best not to use a red laser dot sight because they say that you can accidentally scare off your prey. BUT at the same time, it is much more convenient to aim and less chance to miss

What did I just read ^^^

Rudy,

Do you have an opinion for the MRDS on the rail at 33/45* compared to your mounting place? Railed mounting seems to be popular, I have not tried any as of yet.

I'm offsetting mine on a ring cap but haven't decided which one, forward or aft. Aft would seem better all around but forward would be out of the way of knobs and shit. So I'll probably try it out both ways before I torque it down.

Yeah, I've played with 33 vs 45 just a bit, and to me there doesn't seem to be a huge difference to me as you run into the same problems with lights, lasers and UNSs. I know there are some mounts that are now coming up in height but I am still not a fan, off the tube/optic mount is still what I prefer.
