I haven't yet decided whether to go 18 or 16 inch with my Dissy build (my suppressor needs 2.5 inches behind the shoulder to mount up) but I have a question for those with more experience...

I'm seeing Dissipator builds with low profile midlength gas systems under the handguards AND builds that are full rifle length. Del-ton's kit is rifle-length, CMMG's barrels are middie with rifle length front sight bases OR rifle length, Bushmaster's is rifle-length gas, and BCM's prototype is midlength under the forend again.

What's up? Which is better, and how would one choose? If I get 18 inch AND/OR run a suppressor then the rifle length might be mo' betta? Is there not enough barrel in front of the rifle length gas system on a 16 inch barrel to run reliably? Rifle length if you are using a rifle stock and middie if you want to go collapsable? Just pulling ideas out of my rear here, so somebody help me out.

One more question - how are CMMG barrels? Heard they might not be reliably concentric in the thread department? How about Del-Ton quality? BCM isn't deciding whether to produce theirs until 3rd quarter, and I'd kinda like to build this one anyway. Wonder if Brownells has any dissy barrels....

are you sure its mid? mine is a model one sales and its carbine. at least i thought it was. if someone has the exact length ill peel of the cover and snap a pic. but its carbine on most dissapators i thought except bushy who used rifle? cant swear on it. mine is a cut down FSB with a stock FSB pinned forward of that

Yeah, CMMG barrels are lopro middies under the handguards, as are the BCM proto. But I'm only a couple days into this research project, so I barely know Jack.

More or less you split the diff between rifle length, and carbine length gas systems= midlength. What handguard are you going to run? Iron sights? Mounted optic? BUIS or not? I run a mid gas system on my carbine as it allows for a bit more dedicated burn before the port siphons off a bit of energy (I know, I'm wierd). And I run a MI rail that covers most of the gasblock.

Maybe more learned ones than I can explain it, but I seem to recall that on DI you want long gas, and on piston it doesn't matter. I just can't remember where I heard that, and if it was logically explained. To me its a cosmetic thing mostly.

I'm doing a Magpul MOE rifle length set of handguards, A1/2 front sight base, Daniel Defense A1.5 rear sight, milspec extension and Imod stock.

I'm not sure everybody is on the same page here, so here's a million words to clarify.

My decision is whether to go midlength under the handguard or rifle length at the FSB - middie is pulling ahead for several reasons.

those don't look like they have enough exposed to run your can? Though I suppose you could fix that by going to the 18"...

Personally i've had all 3 gas lengths, and I didn't see much difference between the rifle length and the middy. FWIW, the mid-length I have shoots the best (though that might be because it is a noveske, lol).

Honestly, i'd just get an 18" with rifle length gas from WOA and run the regular a2 FSB as the gas block. If for no other reason than for simplicity. Then you can just run regular furniture, which btw I really like the magpul stuff. I had it on a carbine and it rocked for being super light weight.

so just curious. i have a dissapator too. what are the actual measurements for carbine, mid and rifle. from gas port to the end of the extension or to the shoulder of the extension. i dont care what the dissapator is, i thought it was carbine. ill call model one. but i have a 12" and the port is 8.25" from the end of the extension. is that carbine? pistol is a lot shorter i believe. and its about the same as my M1S from what i could tell. i have what i bought as a carbine gas tube too.
