Looking to get into a ranging binoc. I’d like to keep the price under $1200 or so. All I require is decent optical clarity and the ability to range coyote size game out to 500. I’d like no more than 10x as they’ll be used more for bow hunting than rifle hunting. Am I better off buying a higher end used unit or lower tier new? Leica, Zeiss and Swaro used to be the go to…at least in the small world I occupy.

I see Leupold, Sig and Vortex all have offerings in this range but would like some real world input as boobtube “reviews” are less than desirable.

First decide if you need an onboard ballistics calculator (like Applied Ballistics) or ability to communicate with a Kestrel. If not, there’s a lot of options out there and can save you a considerable amount of money.
Performance in rain and fog is also a consideration. For example, Sig Kilo 10K performed significantly better than the Vortex Fury in those environments during a couple really well reported reviews online. Others have agreed. Sig also had a blue tint through the lens that bugged the shit out of some people and didn’t seem to bother others. Leica was plagued with Bluetooth issues early on. Good luck and I’m sure Doug could talk with you if you call.

I’m pretty much low speed these days so not needing it to communicate with any device. Compensation for angle is required but other than that basic rangefinder/bino function is what I’m after.

I was looking at units on CLNY when Doug posted….

Ilya recommend the Delta 9x45s as a lower priced/no frill LRF Bino.

I'd look for something used, especially if the company has a good warranty.
If you want to upgrade in the future you'll be able to sell on again and take less of a hit than if you buy new.

For what you want and a no BS warranty get the Vortex Fury

They come up on the px a decent amount. You can probably find the applied ballistics model for around $900 used and the non for $650 ish

Lifetime warranty which is almost unheard of for electronics

I bought a pair last spring and used them all year. Zero complaints and I used my Leica 2800 for years before trying the Vortex

The only downside I could see for what you want is the weight of them. They’re a bit heavy but maybe the other options are as well I’m not sure
