midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

Re: midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

I have the midway one and cannot complain. Been shooting off it for about 2 years now, and it has held together just fine. To be fair, I have not used any of the more expensive ones for any length of time though.

Especially at half price, I think it would be tough to beat.

I have been pleased with midways shooting mat. It is still on sale, but so is thier pro series mat and I think your groups will shrink when you use the pro series mat. shooting mat #169-107, Pro Series 276-544. I know there is some shrinkage but that might be when taking a cold shower.

Re: midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

I've seen a couple of the Pro Series mats at local comps. They look pretty good, especially for the sale price.
Definitely much wider than the std mat. Maybe not as portable if you're packing it around in the field but that's why I like to have a couple of options for different applications.

Btw: one of their products I highly recommend are their Pro Series Tactical rifle cases. At $39-$45 (on sale now), it's good bang for the buck. Better and cheaper than the Galatis that I've bought. Just don't open the zippers all the way -- hard to get started back to close.

Re: midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

I got the Pro version today. Nice looking, seems to be well made. I like it's bigger dimensions.

The only thing I didn't like is the velcro straps to keep it rolled up and the little shiny silver D rings and clips on the shoulder strap seem kind of cheesy.

I would have liked to seen quality side release buckles on both the roll up straps and shoulder strap.

I ordered it during the Black Friday daily deals and paid $55 or so, plus shipping. Overall I am happy with it for what I paid.

Re: midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

I was one of the lucky ones that got the pro series for the "Black Friday" price of $29.95
I am gonna give it a work out this weekend on some cold wet ground...but just looking at it, it looks good to go.

I have also used one of the regular mats for a couple of years and it is still holding up well. Actually that is the reason I bought the pro(and the price) the other is holding up great.

Regarding velcro straps vs. std plastic buckles:

One thing to keep in mind. My experience with a DillonPrecision mat with std plastic snap buckles for the rolled up retention straps. At comps where your mat is lying there for a length of time with people walking around, those buckles invariably get stepped on and break. I like the idea of velcro straps for that reason.
And, they're a pain to (user) replace on many mats where they are sewed on. Sure, Dillon will fix it no problem but then you have to ship it, etc. I like Midway's design as it's simpler and less likely to require repair. Food for thought.

Good point about user repairs, but if the velcro gets torn up from being on the bottom of the mat when it is being used, it too will have to be sewn to be repaired. This seems more likely to happen, as I have never seen velcro that has been used or worn against dirt and / or rocks last very long. Plastic buckles could just be tucked under the mat to keep them from being stepped on and damaged.

A while back I had a local tent manufacturer sew D rings and roll up straps with plastic buckles on my old Champion's Choice mat. It works great, other than about two weeks after having it done I had used it in a muddy area so I rolled it out, douched it off with the hose and was letting it sun dry over a trash can in the back yard. My dog decided one of the plastic buckles would be a good thing to chew on and drag the mat around the yard. The buckle is torn up and part of it is broken off, but it still clips in place and works.

I guess it is just a user preference thing. I have had bad experiences with velcro losing it's grip after use and being worn against stuff, so I prefer buckles.

Re: midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

Ordered the Pro series the other day along with one of their rifle cases. I've always been happy with their gear in the past. Hope these items keep up with the expectation.

Re: midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

bought one a couple months ago. I have no complaints at all (except that I didn't get mine for $30!)...

Re: midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

Maybe someone else knows this. The straps on the mat near the end where you put the gun. I have been putting my bipod legs in these and using it to "load" it. Is this what the are intended for?

If not, they sure work well for it.

Re: midway shooting mat at half price : good deal?

the straps are for preloading your bipod.

my mat is already coming apart. i bought 2. i used one twice now, and once once. the one i used for the first time today is already coming apart. i guess you cant expect quality for $29.

From the description at Midway... "Heavy sewn nylon webbing to preload your bipod".

I recently picked up one of these mats and I'm pretty happy with it.
