Rifle Scopes Mil dot zeroing question

If you zero your rifle @ 100y off say 2 mils up rather than center on the crosshairs, will ur shooting program still be accurate at long range if you shoot off mil dots?

For example: say my bullet drops 7 milrads @ 1000y. If I zero my rifle 2 up can I make that 1000y shot still on the lower 5th mil?

Not sure if this would still work or if it would change the rifles line of sight to much for a program to stay accurate.

Im at work and can't try it my self till Tuesday. Just wondering and thought IDE ask. Thx.

Go to JBM ballistics http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi and run a 300 yard zero for your load. It will look similar to this in MILS:

100- +1.4
200- +.8
300- 0
400- -.9
500- -2.0
600- -3.3
700- -4.7

You can use this instead of a 100 yd. zero. If you want to hit @ 100 yards, you just go + 1.4 MILS high (above your center cross hair). This will work using hold overs.

Takes a little getting used to but it's worked really well for me in the past on ukd and rapid tgt engagment ranges.

I was playing with the numbers in my ballistic calculator. I assume you are running a 308 24"? To get the 7 mil @ 1000 you will prob be pushing 155 Scenars at 2900fps.

These are approx @ mile high altitude , ymmv. All holdovers.

-2 = 100
-1 = 300
0 = 425
+1 = 550
+2 = 675
+3 = 800
+4 = 900
+5 = 1000

For a basic zero stick to 100 yards with the center of the reticle. It's less confusing and any yardage you dial to is up from there whether it's in to 25 yards or out to 1000.

If you need to make holds while shooting you can dial on your data for 300 or 400 and then use the holds as posted above. It's what most shooters I know and I as well do for drills like Rifles Only's Moving Chaos where you shoot a mover at 400 yards then go to a 210, 280, 530 and then back to the mover at 400 yards under time.

I actually make a data card with a listed 400 yard zero for holds so I can dial to my 400 yard data and then hold with the reticle from there.

I got some time off work and gave it a shot. No problem !
I dialed up 7moa ( 2mils ) and snapped a shot at 1000 aiming off my bottom 5th mil line. Hit the target, good to go.

The rifle is a custom built 6xc off a tikka m55 action using a sightron 10x42 with modified mil dot reticule bolted up to us optic rings and rail. Shoots Berger 115 hunting vld's at 3000fps.
