Mildot Binos. Anyone?

I am in the market for a set of binos that are small enough for field wear, but have a mil-dot reticle. Something in the 30-42mm objective size. I see Leupold makes some but they seem large. Steiner I think makes some as does Vortex.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these mil-dot binos or other makes?

I am not really into the 50mm or larger binos as they are just too large for real field use and hunting.

I was looking at a friend's set of Nikon Monarchs in the 40ish range and they seem fantastic. But I figure some kind of mildot would be best for me. Since I spent more time on the square range than the field. And I am all mil-dot all the time.

And where would / did you buy yours at? New, used? Street price?

Greyson

I have been looking at those. What was our out the door price on those? Also what do you think of the SUMR reticle? I am used to a Gen 2 mildot, but I can see how the thinner reticle could be better. Have you used it to spot in mils from 400 yards in?

Re: Mildot Binos. Anyone?

Hi Greyson

I've had the 10x42R Tactical's at least a couple of years now, and can't remember the price (and I live in New Zealand so have to add shipping and local taxes).

SUMR reticle is great too, crisp. Do a web search to find a diagram of the reticle. But basically the outer part is in 5 and 10 mils, the inner in 1 and half mils, and a small part in 0.2 mils.

For 400yds you should be fine. But these are binos, so a major part of getting accurate estimation is keeping them stable. I prefer using binos' but the reality is that to get stability for any accurate range estimate for rifle shooting past 600yds my view is that a spotting scope (I have a Leupold 12-40x60 with a Horus H32) is better.

But I also RO and prefer using bino's because it's easier to acquire targets in field situations, particularly with multiple targets. In those situations I use them to 1km / 914yds where I see the poi then sight the reticle to judge the miss, but with hand wobble at those distances I don't try and get better than half mil accuracy.

I previously had 7x50 Steiners but found the size too big for a small pack. The 10x42s are a very convenient size to carry.

IOR TRX 10x42 Binocular w/MP-8 Reticle...

Have you looked at the IOR TRX 10x42 binos? They use IOR's MP-8 reticle, which is calibrated in mils. The glass is outstanding & the sizing should be doable at 24oz. Finally, the housing & design are robust and feature simple ergonomics. They also integrate easily with a tripod. Here's a link:

Re: Mildot Binos. Anyone?

I have these and have been very happy with them. The only weak complaint I have is I wish the hash-marks were a bit more pronounced, thicker(call me old I guess.) Both links below are monoculars.

Solo 8x

These both have silhouettes in addition to mRad for estimating range.

10 and 15X options

Vortex is local to me so I just go to them and buy them. I try to support the local folks when I can. Their stuff is good and well priced in my opinion.

Here are the Bino options if you choose.

10 and 8x binos with reticle

Best of luck!

Re: Mildot Binos. Anyone?

Thanks for the thoughts, Guys. I need some smaller binos for field use and figure a Mil-Dot is more useful for me in the long run.

I was aware of IOR but I will check them out. Perhaps they will be at SHOT as well. If so, I'll stop by their booth.

IOR Valdada has a booth setup at SHOT. Stop by there & talk to Scott or Val about the TRX binos and their entire lineup. They are very down to earth, approachable guys & will take time to speak with you about their gear. Maybe we'll catch them at the same time, as I plan to see them too!

+1 on the IOR TRX 10x42. Great glass. You have to use a tripod or brace them solidly to use the reticle at distance. And if you want the best customer service, bar none, check in with Ceylon!
