We shot today, 1010,1092,1295,1380. 260 Rem Tikka CTR 20inch 2036 fps 130 Berger. I hit everything but the 1380 ran out of gas on it. I'm curious as to how many shots it takes people to get to a mile with the same caliber. When people say they hit at that distance going 64 fps faster than me. Even with a 147 ELD MATCH at 2800 fps Strelok puts you in the red at 1600.

Is that a typo on the velocity or is it really 2036 fps? That is awful, awful slow, even for a 20 inch!

Should only take one shot to reach any distance within reason with solid data. Wind calls - that’s where the magic happens.

Your velocity does seem a bit low. 2 things are really hurting you. 20” and Tikkas shoot 100+FPS slower than the “norm”
If you shooting Berger ammo and not Berger reloads my experience is that their velocities are 100+FPS faster than Hornday, good thing.
In my case Berger 140 Hybrid ammo in a 24” 6.5 goes transonic past 2k in my conditions. Can’t speak highly enough about Berger ammo.
Addressing your actual question:
It’s allow about your data and wind. Good data means 1st round hits, wind notwithstanding.

It's not about what others take to get on at a mile, it's what it will take YOU.

With that said I'm usually within 2 mils left or right depending on wind on my first shot. I have hit on my second plenty of times but wind reallllly kicks your ass with a 6.5 Creed at that range where I shoot so you can get a clean center mass hit, then 5 seconds later if you miss the wind die or pick up your 2-4 mils off target again.

Lol also I'm shooting at 5000 feet above sea level ?. 6.5 Creed stays super until just past 1800 going 2830ish.

Altitude is everything for making 1 mile with 6.5 creed. At 8000ft ASL where I shoot, it’s a performer for sure.

That said...I like the PRC for more better downrange goodness. 2915 147s rock.

I mean I def have other hammers more suited for mile work in the bag too but he was asking about what I assume is a 6.5 creed

Thanks for the replies. We were shooting at 1500 DA here in WNC. I entered 6500 DA and wow! I still have a lot to learn thanks for explaining that.

My da was -2260 on Friday. The winter around here makes you think about things the high elevation guys don’t need to concern themselves with. Twist rates are a lot less forgiving for me also.

Our mile target isn’t shot at much buy guys with 6.5 guns. I’ve hit it plenty with my 260ai though. 140vlds going 2930 though

Velocity is 2736

I shot my 260 (147’s @2800) at a bit over a mile quite a bit the s year.
Many days I got a hit on the second or third shot.
Once on the first(I’ve got some pretty solid data for that spot now) and felt like a stud.
One day it took 5 shots as it was hard to see impacts that day.
A few times a buddy with a 20” 6,5 CM tried it.
with 147’ at 2650 he actually did ok, he’s newer at this and consistent shots are still difficult for him.

altitude is 2200 at that spot.

This was my first time past 800.It was humbling to say the least.I hit all but the 1380,It kicked my butt! We couldn't spot the misses. I'm going back to 500,600,700, and get my groups tightened up then try again.

I use my GoPro through my spotter and record the shots. Also blue tooth to my phone set up next to my ammo box so I can see impacts in real time. If I miss the splash I check the video. 90% of my ELR shooting is solo in the mountains so spotting splash can be tough.
