Mirage bands and effects on accuracy?

I have tried the search feature here and done a Google search or two but have not found any thorough information. I am hoping to find some conclusive testing on use of mirage bands and their effects on accuracy. Most specifically whether or not there is any substantial change of point of impact, and if so is the shift repeatable. I am sure testing has been done, I would like to gain some knowledge in the area. Any help here would be much appreciated.

Re: Mirage bands and effects on accuracy?

Most everyone you see at F-Class competitions has one, myself included. Primary reason, of course, is to minimize mirage interference in the optic from barrel heat. My guess is that properly mounted, it has no effect on accuracy at all, although I can't say as I've ever seen any quantitative study indicating a detrimental effect of a mirage band on accuracy. However, it's probably reasonably safe to assume that if there was an impact on accuracy, you probably wouldn't see them on the rifle barrels of so many of the top level F-Class shooters. Of course that isn't proof in and of itself, but those folks know what they're doing.
