Im ordering my first precision rifle next week and Ive got all the rifle setup picked out, but now I need some recommendations for some of the gear Ill need.

I already have some Hoppe's gun cleaner and oil, but I need something to clean the bore with.

Ill be shooting out in the desert so I need a mat. Or maybe a softcase that doubles as a mat? Or are those not good.

Anything else youd recommend?

Note that Im on a tight budget so I dont want to spend a fortune on these things.

Thanks

Re: Miscellaneous Gear For Newbie?

I'm a newbie as well. Your gear is really an individual preference for what you do. F-class, tactical shoots etc.

During an F-TR match I used a guy's Midway mat. It was very nice and is on sale for around $25.00 I think. I'm going to buy one of those. But if your humping your kit, maybe you need a mat/case/drag bag combo.

You'll need a bore guide, and dewey makes good, 1-piece, fiberglass cleaning rod.

What make/model caliber stick are you getting?

Re: Miscellaneous Gear For Newbie?

Yeay, I googled 'shooting mat' and that Midway one came up. Looks nice. I might get it.

Im not entirely sure of the equipment needed or the process of cleaning a bolt action gun seeing as my only other rifle is a 10/22.

Link to article for cleaning methods or a good cleaning kit would be appreciated.

Im on a budget so Im getting a Howa 1500 barreled action in .308.

Re: Miscellaneous Gear For Newbie?

You won't be disappointed with the HOWA. A case/mat is a good option and is one less bit of kit you have to hump.
A one piece rod is a must, as is a bore guide. Bronze brush is a good idea as well. Dewey rods come with a patch jig so if you get one of those rods your set.

Re: Miscellaneous Gear For Newbie?

The Howa is an awesome choice. I'm looking to buy one for my next bolt action rifle. I have a condor sniper mat as I have to hump-it through fields and woods to get to my shooting spot. I as have a spoting scope. Like SofaKing said, it really depends on what you want to do.

In orders of cleaning gear, buy what you need to get started and then purchase as needed. No sense in buy to much just to get started. Hope this helps, and welcome to the addiction.

Re: Miscellaneous Gear For Newbie?

Do a search on here for cleaning. There are lots of ideas on it. Use the search in my sig and bookmark it for later. As said, a good one piece rod and a bore guide are a must.

On the mat issue. The Midway mat is a great deal. You don't really even need that though, a good sized tarp will do the same thing. Or even an old wool blanket.

At this point, honestly, the best money you could spend would be on the online taining offered here. You will learn an enormous amount and learn the right way from the start.

Good luck and welcome to your new addiction. But, be forwarned, Boltripper once posted that shooting heroin would be cheaper...he was right.
