MK 12 Build

Re: MK 12 Build

Depends what stock you are using. I used an A2 stock with standard rifle length receiver extension and standard rifle buffer. Everything works fine. If you are using a collapsable stock, then I would thing a standard carbine or an H buffer would be fine.

Re: MK 12 Build

Like John said...IT DEPENDS!

With a rifle-length/A2 receiver extension, you'll need a rifle-length buffer.

With a carbine (or entry) receiver extension, you will need a carbine buffer.

The weight of the buffer is not always determined just by the stock/receiver extension you are using, but rather the configuration of the rifle itself, the ammo you are using, whether you will be shooting it suppressed all or part of the time, etc., etc.

If you can tell us a little more about your particular build and your intended purposes, etc., it would be easier to give you more detailed/specific advice.

Re: MK 12 Build

Hi guys thanks for the reply...

I will be using an A2 buttstock.. I will try to clone the mk262 round, and the mk12 will be non-suppressed (CA law sucks).

-thanks guys

Here is a good thread on single vs. two-stage triggers that includes my usual ramblings on the subject.

Single vs. Two-Stage Triggers

It is ultimately a very personal decision as to whether you want/need one versus the other type of trigger. I run both in various rifles, but all with very different purposes.

Re: MK 12 Build

Hello from cali.

Hope you have lots of $$$ to spend, making a mk12 to spec isn't cheap. You can build something spr-ish for about 1k-1200 bucks though.

As for MK262 ammo, it is a hotter round. You will be at or higher than published max. Google around for different discussions about it. I think you'd be better off developing a load that is specific to your rifle and your choice of bullet, powder, brass, primer, and COAL.

This is what I did. Not because I thought it was the "best" trigger, but because I was building as faithful a clone to the Mk12 mod0 as I could, so my choice was already made for me. If you are looking for the "best" trigger, then the suggestion of one of the Giselle triggers would be where I would start. Oh yeah, and I would go with a 2-stage, but that's personal preference.

You won't thank me when you are broke; but you are welcome!

Re: MK 12 Build

do not get the KAC trigger, we had so many issues with them we started replacing them with geissele until the SCAR SSR"s show up.

JUST CUZ IT WAS ON THE GOVERNMENT CONTRACT DOESN"T MEAN ITS THE BEST THING ON THE MARKET!!!

on a standard mk12 it is a regular bolt and carrier, nothing special, tuned or anything. they swap them out of the regular ar's all the time into the mk12's. if someone tells you otherwise then they are high. the mk12 is a nice system don't get me wrong i have one myself at home but i have a diferent stock and i have a geissele trigger in mine.

Cheap they are not; but worth it, they most certainly are. I'm finishing up on mine, sort of a MK12 Mod "me", being a spec Mod 1 upper, modified lower (UBR stock, Geissele SSA-E, full ambi, Atlas V8, etc.), and still trying to come up with my final solution for the ideal FFP glass on top of it. I'm waiting on the S&B 1-8 to be released as it looks like the winner.

Clones are a lot of fun, especially for the collectors and traditionalists, and my build started out as a clone at first. However, one thing I realized through my years in the USMC is while the military does many things well, they rarely do anything perfect due to budget and production constraints. Hence my own modifications in accordance with my own mindset of what the ultimate SDM/Spotter's rifle would be. Traditionalist I am not.

Amen! Just look at the POS 2nd focal plane scopes on all the issued sniper rifles. Fortunately that era is soon closing.

Re: MK 12 Build

+1 on a different trigger. The KAC isn't junk IMO,but you can get alot more for less money. As BigJoe stated the Government is not the best example for quality or smart spending practices. Any organization that spends $11G's on a .308, 5 mags, a Pelican Case, and the POS scope mentioned above should never be used as a benchmark.

Don't get caught up in the "MILSPEC" business. It's not always the best option.

Re: MK 12 Build

someday I will shoot BIGJOE'S or TD's MK12's---that is the closest to owning 1 as I will get---I hold the MK12 on a pedestal simply cause I'm an AR15 fanatic but I think one can build an equally accurate/dependable AR for less
also the Giessele triggers are phenomenal and triggers for AR's
is something I'm engrossed with--have used 12 different thus far
(currently have 8) and when the round counts are much higher I will know for sure which I prefer--but Giess. and AR Gold are
my favorites right now

That is a good site -- recently put together by one of our customers...

He would appreciate any additional info from interested MK12 owners.

Thank you for the name drop! As you know, I've been working in the middle east for the last 2 years (Iraq mostly) and I simply have not had the time to update the site to my liking. I still need to fix some misinformation, add some new submitted pictures, requests for links, etc.

In the mean time, if anyone has suggestions for information fixes or pictures they want submitted, then just visit the site and shoot me an email listed at the bottom.
