Mk12Mod1; why 2 piece rings instead of a 1 piece mount?

Was just reading another thread about 'what rings/mount' for a SPR and saw some interesting comments about the superior mounts being those with the most bearing surface. This led me to think, on my Mk12Mod1, why did the military go with 2 piece ARMS rings if a mount would have way more bearing surface? I would also think that being able to get a 1 piece mount off the rifle easier/faster than 2 ARMS rings as well as the mount being able to introduce added MOA would be a bonus as well.

Is there simply not a need to, and while a mount is nice, it doesn't really make a difference? Weight?

Not looking to switch as I have the spec ARMS rings, but this did perk some curiosity that I didn't know the answer to.

Simple answer is because the ARMS rings were the only thing available at the time the Mod 1 went into service. They had been standard issue on the Mod 0 versions prior to that. At the time, I dont think any manufacturers were producing offset one piece mounts, or at least none that had undergone the tests required for military procurement.

Personally, on a Mod 1 I wouldn't worry about being in spec as much, because the spec mounts result in an odd eye relief. I'd throw an ADM, Bobro, or LaRue mount on it and call it good.

German, I'm running a NF Unimount 20 MOA on the Mod 0 I built with the NF F1 you sold me. Being out of Mil Spec on the mounts or the trigger didnt stress me out. i believe those are personal pref items. I agree that mounts/rings have come a long way since the ARMS. Plus I'm not sure if you ever return to absolute zero with a QD mount. Anybody have thoughts on POI shifts with QD mounts.

That's about what I thought. Just wasn't sure if there was an underlying reason not to switch over as it is only a build component. The ARMS has been fine for me so far but eventually may get some sort of uni-mount to get an extra 20MOA out of things.

As far as POI shift, anytime I've taken ANYTHING that was QD off a rifle it has come back close, but not absolute zero. This is for rings as well as EoTech and Aimpoints. I do this a bit as I put an EOTech on my MK12 and take the scope/rings off if I go hunting at night as the MK12 has the Ops Inc suppressor setup for it.

How's the NF? Still hate selling it but love the new Steiner.
