I am in the market for NightForce 3.5-15x50 F1 scope. I will be using the scope on a tactical sniper rifle (.223 semi-auto) for tactical sniper competition.

Target distances will be range from 100 yards out to 600 yards. Targets will be at unknown distances and the shooter must be able to mil distances with out the aid of a range finder.

Should I order a MLR reticle or NP-R1 reticle?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jerry

If you are going mil then go with the MLR and if you are going MOA then go with the NP R1.

Your other threads seem to point that you are going to be doing more 3-gun type stuff than precision rifle comps, and your optic choice should match your intent (a scope that will fit both roles may not excel at both).

mil/mil or moa/moa, either works. If you are going to be in any comps with a spotter you should consult your spotter on which reticle/adjustment format you two would like to use.

Don't most shooters/spotters in tactical sniper competition use mil/mil?</div></div>

A majority do but there are some MOA people. Just wasn't sure you knew the NP R1 was an MOA based reticle from your post. Whatever you get make sure the scope has matching reticle and knobs.

Re: MLR Reticle or NP-R1 Reticle?

The reason I am asking is that I may be paired up with a spotter I do not know. I want to choose a system that is most common with other spotters so I don't have an issue communicating with them. I know this is not a desirable situation, but I do not have a spotter at this time.

I am planning on using ths same scope for three-gun competition also. I read the FAQ's regarding reticle types. There seems to be many opinions on this subject.

I guess I will go with mil/mil? I have no idea of the advantages or disadvantages of each reticle type for 3-gun competition.

Go Mil, Mil and take a look at the mil reticle by Nightforce, instead of black dots Nightforce uses see through circles. Very nice reticle IMHO

I like the 1/2 mil marks better in the MLR reticle. Easier for holds.

You can't go wrong with that IMHO

Re: MLR Reticle or NP-R1 Reticle?

I have the F1 in mil dot/.1 mil. Also pretty sure I know what competition your talking about. Won it last year with an AR. It can be done. Shoot me a PM I go there all the time. I'll let you try it out. Its on a .223 5R right now though.

And also the NF F1 mil dots are NOT hollow. At least mine aren't. They might be on the non FFP scopes, but not on the FFP/F1 I have.

Re: MLR Reticle or NP-R1 Reticle?

I have a MOA / MOA scope NPR 1 and I love it. I can do all the calcs in my head under pressure. I dont need slide rules(Mil Dot Master) or memorizing ranges or tables.
I like the simplicity of all MOA.

Mil Dot is the universally accepted standard that most of of the old school shooter grew up with - thats probably why is will be recommended by the old timers. Plus - there is tons and tons of stuff written about it.

But - no matter which on you go with - just learn that one and master it. Disregard what everybody else is using and tune them out. Be the master of the one you have.
