A good friend of mine at work is looking for a upper for plinking and just general fun range use. The upper in question is an A3 carbine 16" complete with BCG and charge handle. The price is right around $500. The ammo is cheap and that's the reason for this caliber as he doesn't reload. What are your thoughts or experiences with this brand and upper? Thanks much for any input

My advice would be to avoid it. 7.62x39 ARs have a tendency to break their bolts and feed very poorly. Not to mention Model 1 is already at the bottom of the quality ladder for an AR. He would likely be better off with a 5.45x39 AR. There are better quality guns available in that caliber and they feed way better in an AR platform. Sometimes even standard AR mags work. I believe Smith and Wesson and Spikes make some decent 5.45 caliber ARs.

5.45x39 is a sweet caliber for an AR15. The cheap 7N6 surplus ammo shoots 1.5 ish MOA all day long and is absolutely reliabe with a heavier hammer spring. I used this in many carbine classes/events where you hose down numerous targets at closer ranges and cannot pick up your brass afterwards.

If you need sub MOA (i.e. bughole) accuracy out of the same gun, pull the bullets, reweigh the powder and put 69 Barnes of 70 VLD Bergers in the steel cases. (Yes, the bullets are a little bigger in diameter but resizing is not necessary since they are very soft compared to the original steel core bullets and the forcing cone will save you the extra step).

I might have a very good S&W barrel plus BCG for sale. Please PM if interested.
