looking for a new deer hunting rifle, probably 30-06, thinking something a small step up from win, rem, browning etc. having a lefty option is nice. any feedback on Montana Rifle Company and their X2 rifles (stainless / synthetic)?

If you're getting a .30-'06, I don't see anything being much of an upgrade to a Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter or SuperGrade. All the ones I've seen shot 5-shot groups under 1/2", and my son-in-law has one that he has done well with at distances out to 1,000 yds., using Berger 185 grain hunting VLD. That was just for fun, shooting at steel, and watching the .338 LM guys try to get on target at 750 yards. On that day, my son-in-law's rifle (with him shooting) never missed a gong from 250, 500, or 750 yards, and the wind was gusting from the right at a variable 3-14 mph, direct crosswind. He ran out of ammo after hitting 2 of 5 at 1,000 yards, and those didn't miss by very much. On a hunting trip to the YO Ranch, he shot his deer at 100 yards, then the guide offered to let him shoot the gong at 540 yards, and turkeys, etc. at shorter distances on their practice range. He only took one shot at 540 yards, with a load using a Nosler AccuBond. The gong was hit so well that it seemed like the sound of the impact on the gong coming back all that distance to us was louder than the report from firing the bullet. If recoil was not such an issue for me, I'd give up my 6.5 and use his rifle, or one like it. He has a Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30x scope on it.

I have one in 300wm, put a brake on it and it shoots bugholes. Not too heavy and makes a nice hunting rifle. Mine has a 20moa rail on it so I have to use a stockpad to get proper cheek weld with the sporter stock
