So I went to a range yesterday to confirm zero before a match this weekend (I messed with my scope since last shooting) and all was well. I took 22 rounds of a remaining box of SW Match 175 SMK and at 100y I could cover the group with a quarter.

For grins I took a box of old military ball ammo I got and wanted to see how it shot. The headstamp says "69 IVI" or something like that.

Same rifle, same target, same distance, same DOPE. The group was terrible, probably 6" - 8" or more! I suspect it is 7.62mm so did shooting that out of my .308 cause that much problem? I forget whether you can/can't shoot 7.62 from a .308 or vice versa? There wasn't any noticable pressure signs other than slightly harder bolt lift and the recoil was harder. I am using a .299 bore Bartlein barrel.

    Hope I didn't f'ck up my gun!

Sounds like it just was some old, crappy ammo...could have been crappy to begin with, then stored or mishandled over the years. Or your rifle just didn't like it. I'm not saying all old ammo is bad. I have HXP .30-06 for my M1 with '62, '69 and '70 headstamps and it all shoots the same, which is pretty well. The '62 has a ball powder too, while the other two are a stick powder. It was probably always stored cool and dry though and I keep it in a dry basement room.

Guys if you shoot ball ammo even under ideal conditions etc....is basically machinegun ammo.

If you get a lot of ball ammo that shoots 2" is considered excellent. 4" or more is not unheard of.

Go back to the match ammo you should be fine!
